Here is the latest from the Bowlie.
Classic Pairs Tournament.
The Casey Surveying and Design Open Classic Pairs event was played on Saturday and Sunday, June 2/3.
It was great to see both greens full in perfect conditions for Bowls as 26 teams contested three games of fifteen ends on Saturday and two games of fifteen ends on Sunday.
Our club was well represented and it was good to welcome visitors from other local clubs as well as teams from the Blue Mountains and one team from South Australia. We had a number of teams from the Parkes Railway Club, Condobolin, Grenfell, Cowra, Hazelbrook, Batlow and Cowell in South Australia.
The field of 52 Bowlers included nine year old Connor Fliedner from the Parkes Railway Club and I believe he is the youngest bowler to play in a tournament at our club, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is not one of the youngest bowlers to play anywhere in NSW. Well done Connor – look forward to seeing you playing for many years to come.
The scoring system was changed from previous years and everyone seemed happy with the result. Teams scored ten points for winning a game, five points for a drawn game and one point for every end won.
Some great bowls were played and the first three placed teams were within four points of each other. The five place getters were:
1st. Brett Frame and Mark Dwyer from the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club on 95 points.
2nd. Vicki and John Lehmann, visiting from Cowell in South Australia, on 93 points.
3rd. Steve Frame and Shane Sharman, from Parkes Railway Club, on 91 points.
4th. Mike and Paul Went, from Parkes BSC, on 83 points.
5th. Steve Turner and Guy Ellery, from Parkes BSC, on 82 points.

The prize for the best score on Sunday went to the combined Parkes BSC and Parkes Railway team of Tom Casey and Graham Fliedner who scored 38 points.
The club would like to thank Casey Surveying and Design and the co-sponsors, Parkes Courier Service and Telescope Tyres – without their sponsorship events like this don’t happen.
These events also need a band of volunteers who put in a lot of time and effort to make sure they are a success. I can’t name them all but the club would like to thank them for a job well done. In particular the club would like to thank Brett Frame and Greg Howlett and their helpers who keep the greens in such good condition, Graham Barby and his helpers who organise the players and make sure everything runs smoothly and run the raffles, the Cooks – Tom Furey and his team who fed 52 hungry bowlers on both days, the Umpires Keith MacRae, Geoff Freeman and Tony Riordan and the Bar staff who do a great job.
Congratulations to all the players and volunteers – it was a great weekend of Bowls and Tom Casey has indicated that he is willing to continue his sponsorship of the event so we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Only one Championship game was played during the week.
On Thursday, May 31 Guy Ellery and Rob Irving won the first end of their match against Greg Howlett and Jim Blake. Things were fairly close in the early part of the match and after thirteen ends Guy and Rob had a 3 shot lead, 16-13. From there on, Guy and Rob dominated the match to run out winners 32-14.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, May 31.
Four games of Pairs were played with the following results.
Col Mudie and Steve Mills got away to a great start and, after eleven ends had a lead of 17-4 against Steve Ryan and Ray Jones. Over the next three ends, Steve and Ray scored nine shots, to trail 13-17 but Col and Steve held on to win 22-19.
In a fairly close match, Ted Wright and Gordon Dickson got home against Trevor Harvey and Col Woods, 25-20.
Greg Huggins and John Watson were too good for John Dunn and Bob Freeman.
