Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
ST ANDREW’S DAY CARNIVAL
On Saturday 32 bowlers played three games of eight ends, of three bowl pairs in the St Andrews Bowls Day. This proved very popular with all participants and it was pleasing to see a number of non-regular bowlers participate.
The combination of Mike Valentine and Steve Mills took out the major winner’s prize, followed by Tony Bright and Norm Keane, Mike Parkes and Valma Westcott, John Ward and Noel Nicholson, John Carr and Tony Byrne.
The Encouragement Award went to Greig Ball and Bob Freeman. Eight other bowlers went home with prizes from the raffle.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
18 bowlers turned out to try to try their luck with the $1000 jackpot.
Mick Furney and Greg Fisher scored seven shots on the first three ends and held on to win narrowly over Dean Searl and Kevin Hynds 15-14.
Chris Dunn and Guy Ellery played Alan Affleck and Dave Johnson. This was a very close match which was decided on the last end, where Chris and Guy scored two shots to win 17-15. In another very close match Rob Irving and Craig Henry had a one shot victory over Mal Porter and Ted Wright, winning 15-14.
In the triples match Tom Cole, Mick Blunt and Keith Hutchison finished strongly to defeat Ian Brown, Don Littlewood and Tom Furey 17-10.
Voucher winners were Chris Dunn, Mick Furney, Guy Ellery, Dave Johnson, Craig Henry and Kevin Hynds.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along next Sunday for a game, a sausage sizzle, and to be in the running for the $1000 jackpot.
SOCIAL
Thursday saw 14 bowlers play two games of pairs and one game of triples.
In the triples match Bob Freeman, Bernie Mitchell and Keith MacRae played Rob Irving, Guy Ellery and Gary McPhee. Rob, Guy and Gary got away to a good lead of 20-3 after 10 ends and went to win the match 26-11.
John Ward and John Dunn played Alan Affleck and Greig Ball. The two John’s got away to a good start and led 12-4 after nine ends. Alan and Greig then started to play much better bowls, winning 10 of the last 12 ends, and went on to win comfortably 25-14.
Norm Keane and Wally Austin played Ray Jones and Joe Crowley. In a close game, where the lead changed four times, Ray and Joe scored three shots on the last end to win narrowly 18-17.
Thursday’s major prize winners were Ray Jones and Joe Crowley and the minor winners were Rob Irving, Guy Ellery and Gary McPhee.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
Thursday night saw 63 bowlers play in the twilight bowls competition. In a low scoring match High-Rollers and Young Guns had a 9all draw. Other close matches saw Elle defeat Tuff & Surf 15-14, and Battlers defeat Spadgers 13-11. The major prize winner’s were Wreck-Em Fix-Em with Bartley Barkers claiming the minor prize. The lucky loser’s prize winner was Back Trundle Rd.
This week’s twilight bowls will be played tonight, Wednesday, instead of the usual Thursday night.
Players are also reminded that the last night of twilight bowls before the Christmas, New Year break will be Thursday 12th December.
CLUB CHALLENGE
The Gold team has bowed out of the State Club Challenge, being soundly beaten by the very strong Taren Point club on Saturday in matches played at the Lithgow Workers club. Taren Point showed why they are the top performing club in the state this year.
In the singles, Brett Frame matched his opponent for the first half of the match. At this stage only one shot separated the two bowlers. However the Taren Point player finished the stronger, running out a comfortable winner 31-19.
In the pairs match, Tom Casey and Col Hayward tried hard but were unable to match their opponents. Taren Point eventually winning the match by eight shots.
With Taren Point holding an unbeatable 2-0 lead, the fours match was stopped with a few ends still to play.
The Parkes team of Geoff Freeman, John Corcoran, John Davies and Graham Fliedner trailed 12-0, before staging a comeback to trail 12-15. When the match was stopped Taren Point led 19-12.
GENERAL
The clubs Christmas raffle, with a value of approximately $1000, is up and running with tickets available on Friday nights as well as at the main bar anytime during the week.
A reminder that the Mixed Fours nominations close today, Wednesday 4th Dec. The Mixed Fours Championship matches will be played this weekend, 7th-8th Dec.
Presentation Day will be held on Saturday 14th December. All bowlers are encouraged to attend.
The bowls committee has decided to revert back to the old daylight saving starting times. This means that names are to be in by 1pm for a 1:30pm start.
Saturday social bowls is now a mixed event.
