Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Good fields competed in both Thursday and Saturday social bowls with close scores resulting in a large percentage of the games.
Thursday saw 28 bowlers play two games of Triples and four games of Pairs.
Bob Freeman, John Dunn and Geoff Freeman played Tom Cole, Allan Wright and John Ward. This was a good close match which had Tom, Allan and John holding a 13-10 lead after 13 ends. Bob, John and Geoff won the next five ends to lead 23-13 and then held on to record a 23-20 win.
The other triples game saw Steve Clegg, Ray Jones and Warren Bevan play Mike Phillips, John Hodge and Col Hayward. This was another close game which saw the scores locked 16 all after nineteen ends. Col’s team scored one shot on the penultimate end to lead 17-16. Warren’s team then scored three shots on the last end to win 19-17.
Norm Keane and John Corcoran scored a good 32-13 win over Les Kent and John O’Malley.
Noel Nicholson and Rob Chandler (SA) only lost five ends in defeating Ricky Frame and Greig Ball 31-9.
John Watson and Kevin Hynds scored a hard fought 17-15 win over Geoff Leonard and Terry Hetherington.
The last game saw Bill Skinner and Keith MacRae play Gary McPhee and Mike Valentine. The score was 9 all after seven ends. Then Bill and Keith won eight of the next ten ends to lead 20-12. Gary and Mike fought back to win the next three ends to level at 20 all after 20 ends. Bill and Keith scored one shot on the last end to win the game 21-20.
Major winners were Steve Clegg, Ray Jones and Warren Bevan with the minor winners being Bob Freeman, John Dunn and Geoff Freeman.
29 bowlers played six games of Pairs and one Triples in social bowls on Saturday.
Ted Wright and John Ward played Don Littlewood and Brett Frame. Despite dropping six shots on one end, Ted and John established a handy 15-9 lead after 13 ends. Don and Brett stormed home, winning seven of the last eight ends, to win the game 21-17.
Col Woods and Kevin Hynds played Ron Murray and Keith MacRae. In a low scoring game, Col and Kevin trailed 7-14 after 15 ends. They then won the next three ends to level at 14 all. The scores were again tied 15 all after 20 ends. Ron and Keith managed to score one shot on the last end to win the game 16-15.
After the scores were tied 8 all after 11 ends, Ray Jones and Joe Crowley finished the stronger in their 19-13 win over Ron Hornery and Greig Ball.
Bill Skinner and Col Hayward came from behind, winning five of the last seven ends, to defeat Wes Westcott and Rob Chandler (SA) 23-20.
Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington scored a 26-16 win over Valmai Westcott and Gwenda Carty.
In a game which saw the scores level on six occasions, Alan Affleck and Pat Cooney scored one shot on the last end to have an 18 all draw with Dean Searl and Dave Johnson. Dean and Dave won the ends 11-10.
In the Triples game Geoff Freeman played lead for both teams. Geoff, Mike Valentine and Tom Casey played Geoff, Chris Dunn and Warren Bevan. After an even start to the match, Warren’s side got out to lead 20-8 after 15 ends. Tom’s side then won the next five ends to level at 20 all. Warren’s side again led 25-22 after the penultimate end before Tom’s team scored three shots on the last end to draw the match 25 all. Geoff, Mike and Tom won the ends 13-12 in a very entertaining match.
Major prize winners were Ron Murray and Keith MacRae with the minor prize winners being Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington.
Next Saturday is the club’s monthly Super Saturday which sees the prize money tripled. All bowlers are invited to this Greig Ball and Tom Casey sponsored event.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saturday also had two Minor Triples matches.
Steve Ryan, Peter McPhee and John O’Malley had a 23-17 win over Tom Furey, Wilbur Harris and Steve Mills.
The second match saw John Dunn, Wally Grant and Mick Craft score a convincing 36-9 win over Bob Freeman, Les Kent (subbing for Wally Austin) and Steve Turner.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
Only 10 bowlers turned out on Sunday morning, playing one Triples and one Pairs game.
In the Triples game Alan Affleck, Guy Ellery and John Dunn only lost two ends in their 24-2 win over Bob Freeman, Chris Dunn and Mal Porter.
The Pairs game saw Mick Blunt and Kevin Hynds play Rob Kelly and Steve Ryan. The score was 8 all after 8 ends. Mick and Kevin won the next three ends to lead 15-8. Rob and Steve then scored seven shots on the last two ends to draw the game 15 all. Mick and Kevin won the ends 7-6.
Prize winners were Chris Dunn, Mick Blunt, Rob Kelly and Steve Ryan.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000. The range of numbers for the jackpot margin is being reduced by two each week until the jackpot is won. Next week the range will be 1-15.
Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
