Handicap Singles Decided

Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
HANDICAP SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Tom Furey is the 2014 handicap singles champion following his win over John Dunn in the final.
After four preliminary rounds of play, featuring some very good matches, the four top performing players went through to the semi-finals. They were in qualifying order: Col Woods with 4 wins, Graham Barby, John Dunn and Tom Furey, all with 3 wins.
The first semi saw Tom Furey completely overwhelm Col Woods with his 25-7 win. The other semi was much closer with John Dunn coming from 18-21 down to defeat Graham Barby 25-21. This set up a final between Tom and John.
Tom had the better start and got out to lead 12-5 and held that advantage to lead 17-11. It was all Tom over the concluding ends as he went on to win 25-11. Congratulations Tom on the consistent bowls you played in all six matches.
MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
Quarter final matches were played last Wednesday.
Margaret Hawken and Graham Barby had a good 31-17 win over Joan Simpson and Mick Craft.
Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward had a hard fought 20-17 win over Karen and Tom Casey.
After being down 10-0 early in the match Chris Dunn and Pat Cooney finished very strongly, winning nine of the last eleven ends to defeat Robyn Morgan and Keith MacRae 25-17.
Rhona and Mick Went had a comfortable 24-13 win over Liz Byrne and Arthur Corbett.
Major prize winners on the night were Chris Dunn and Pat Cooney and the minor winners were Margaret Hawken and Graham Barby.
The semi-finals will be played tonight. Rhona and Mick Went will play Chris Dunn and Pat Cooney and the other semi will see Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward play Margaret Hawken and Graham Barby.
Members are reminded that nominations for the Mixed Fours close on Sunday, November 9.
BRAGGERS CUP
The Parkes Bowling and Sports Club bowlers recorded a 6-0 clean sweep victory over Railway Diggers in the return singles matches played last Friday.
Zone junior teammates Matt Parker and Doug Miller did battle with Matt getting out to a 21-7 lead before Doug fought back to narrow the margin to 21-15. Matt then scored a maximum four shot end to win 25-15. A great exhibition from two talented bowlers.
In another very entertaining match Peter McPhee played Ben McNaughton. This was a very close match with the scores tied 13 all before Ben got a mini break to lead 21-17. Peter fought back to win six of the last seven ends played to record a 25-22 win.
In completing the 6-0 win Col Hayward, Tom Casey, Pat Cooney and Maree Grant all scored good wins.
A big thanks to the markers and also the supporters who showed appreciation for the good bowls played by all players.
This Friday will see six games of pairs played at the Railway Diggers Club commencing at 6pm.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
52 bowlers turned out last Thursday.
In a very close match Two and a Half Fitters won the last two ends to score a come from behind 11-10 win over Stitch and Bitch.
After trailing 8-10, Central West Glass won the last three ends to defeat Elle 14-10.
We Wreckem also came from behind to record a 12-9 win over Bushies.
The other winning teams were Back Trundle Road 2, Three Amigos, Rolling Stones, Super Bees, Golden Girls and High Rollers.
Major winners were Two and a Half Fitters with the minor winners being Back Trundle Road 2. The lucky losers prize was won by Elle.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday saw 28 bowlers contest seven games of pairs.
John Keogh and Phil Helies (Wyong) held a 14-6 lead after 12 ends and went on to defeat Mike Valentine and Terry Hetherington 22-13.
Tony Byrne and John Corcoran won the last five ends to record a come from behind 23-17 win over Wally Austin and Mike Parkes.
Max Tomkins and Dave Buggie led all the way in their 21-17 win over Geoff Buggie (Cattai) and Greig Ball.
Gordon Dickson and Col Mudie had a good 21-11 win over John Dunn and John Carr.
John Hodge and Kevin Hynds proved too strong in their 28-12 win over Rob Irving and Keith MacRae.
John Watson and Ron Hornery won five of the last six ends to record a good 24-14 win over Bob Freeman and John Ward.
The match of the day saw Col Woods and Flip Fliedner up against Graham Dixon and Warren Bevan. Graham and Warren held a 15-6 lead after 12 ends. Col and Flip dominated the next seven ends to level the score 18 all. Graham and Warren scored two shots on the penultimate end to again grab the lead only to see Col and Flip score five shots on the last end to record a 23-20 win.
The major winners were Gordon Dickson and Col Mudie and the minor winners were John Hodge and Kevin Hynds.
Owing to the handicap singles championship only 10 bowlers played social bowls on Saturday.The triples match saw Bob Freeman, Phil Helies (Wyong) and Keith MacRae up against Allan Wright, John Carr and Geoff Freeman. A closely fought start to the game saw the score 14 all after 14 ends. From then on it was all Allan, John and Geoff as they won six of the last seven ends to record a good 33-15 win.
In the pairs match Steve Turner and Dave Buggie played John Ward and Col Mudie. In a low scoring game John and Col held a 11-3 lead after 11 ends before Steve and Dave fought back to level the score at 12 all after 18 ends. The next two ends saw single shots scored, one by each team, to leave the score 13 all after 20 ends. During the last end each team held shot at various stages before Col played the winning bowl to get John and he home 14-13 in a very entertaining game.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
6 bowlers played a game of triples.
Ian Brown, Chris Dunn and Kevin Hynds scored four shots on the last two ends to defeat Bob Freeman, Kim Evans and Mal Porter 16-13.
Prize winners were Mal Porter and Kevin Hynds.
The jackpot was not won and will be $760 next week. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
MEMBERS PAIRS TOURNAMENT
The club is holding a members pairs tournament on Saturday, November 8. Prize money of $550 will be shared by the top five performing teams. Check the notice board for the conditions of play and put your team on the nomination sheet.
MINI CARNIVAL
The Parkes Auto Wreckers and Littlewood Smash Repairs sponsored event is being held on Sunday, November 23. Nominations of teams of four close on Thursday, November 20.

RULE OF THE WEEK
Question: A lead delivered the jack and played his first bowl. The opposing lead then queried the length of the roll of the jack. What shall happen?
Answer: Once the jack has been delivered and the first bowl bowled, no one can challenge the legality of the jack position.
