CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Friday, May 6 Steve “Nimo” Mills played a Major Singles match against Graham “Flip” Fliedner.
In a see-sawing game “Flip” got away to a good start, winning the first three ends to lead 4 – 0.The next two ends were won by “Nimo”, and starting the sixth end he lead 7 – 4. From there on it was a very close battle and the lead changed hands six times and on the twenty-eighth end “Flip” scored two shots to take the lead 27 -26. The next two ends were shared, each player winning one end by a single shot and “Nimo” scored one shot on the thirty-first end and, for the seventh time in the match, the scores were again level - 28 all. On the next end “Flip scored 3 shots to give him the match 31 – 28.
On Saturday, May 7 three championship matches were played.
In a Major Singles match Wilbur Harris was too strong for Mark Dwyer and had a convincing win over 24 ends.
In a Major Pairs march, Graham “Flip” Fliedner and Dave Johnson also had a convincing win over Rob Irving and Keith MacRae ( substitute for Ray Jones) winning 23 – 10.
John Hodge was too good for George Boatswain in a Minor Singles match winning 27 -17.
On Sunday, May 8 Tom Furey won the early ends against Tom Casey but at the start of the thirteenth end the scores were level 10 all. From there on, Tom Casey gradually pulled away and after thirty-two ends won the match 31 – 19.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, May, 5.
Twenty bowlers played five games of Pairs.
In the closest match of the day, Geoff Freeman and John Watson lost the first four ends to trail Keith MacRae and Chris Dunn 0 – 7 but won the next three ends to lead 8 – 7 at the start of the eighth end. Both Pairs played well from there on and going into the last end Keith and Chris had the advantage, 22 – 19. Playing a great last end, Geoff and John scored 4 shots to run out winners 23 – 22.
Other matches went to John Corcoran and Graham Barby over John Hodge and Rob Irving, John Dunn and Noel Nicholson over Ron Hornery and Jim Blake, John Ward and Bill Skinner over John Carr and Bob Freeman and, in the final match, Warren Bevan and Wally Grant were too strong for Rod Ramsay (visitor from Railway/Diggers Club) and Joe Crowley.
Prize winners were John Ward and Bill Skinner and the Runners-up prize went to Geoff Freeman and John Watson.
Saturday, May, 7.
In addition to the three Championship matches, five games of Pairs were played.
The closest match of the day saw Geoff Freeman and John Carr jump out to an early lead of 6 – 1, over John Corcoran and Joe Crowley, after 4 ends and maintain the lead throughout the match. At the start of the last end the lead was 21 – 13 and John and Joe scored 5 shots on the end but just failed to catch their opponents, losing 18 – 21.
The team of Steve Ryan and John Taylor also lead all the way to defeat Wally Grant and Bob Freeman 18 -13.
Other winners on the day were the teams of Tom Furey and Steve Ryan, Ron Hornery and Guy Ellery and Brett “Baldy” Frame and Ron Fisher.
Sunday, May 8.
Due to the weather the Mixed Sunday Bowls didn’t get underway.
Come along any Sunday for a game of bowls (names in by 1-00pm for a 1-30 start) which will finish just in time for you to settle in with your favourite drink to watch the football and enjoy a hotdog.
Open Pairs Event
Just a reminder that entries for the Open Pairs event, sponsored by Casey Surveying and Design, to be played on the weekend of May 14/15, close on Thursday, May 12.
Overall Prize money is in excess of $3,000 with a first prize of $900.
Teams can be all Male or all Female or Mixed.
Each team will play three matches of fifteen ends on the Saturday and two matches of fifteen ends on the Sunday.
Visit by ACT Travelling Bowlers
On Thursday, May 12 a team of bowlers from the ACT are visiting the club for a day of Mixed Social Bowls. We are expecting between 30 and 40 visitors and while we do have a number of members who have indicated they will play we would still like more names, male and female, to be added to the list

The Zone 4 Pennants playoffs will be held on the weekend of May, 28/29.

Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.15pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
Great Pub style meals are available at reasonable prices from Mel’s Café.
The Badge draw wasn’t won last Friday and this week will be worth $1700.
