Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
Club Championships.
The Major Fours competition got underway on the weekend with two very close games.
On Saturday the team of Col Hayward, Arthur Corbett, Rob Irving and John Hodge got away to a good start against Tom Furey, Dave Johnson, Steven “Nimo” Mills and Gary McPhee to lead 7-4 after eight ends. On the tenth, twelfth and fourteenth ends the scores were tied and starting the fifteenth end the score was 9 all. Over the next six ends Col’s team built a small lead and with one end to play Tom’s side needed three shots to tie the match and send it into a tie breaker. Though they tried very hard they only managed two shots and Col’s team claimed the match 14-13.
On Sunday, the team of Warren Bevan, Dean Searl, Dave Buggie and Wilbur Harris struggled early on in the match but after seven ends they had drawn level with Ron Hornery, Wally Grant, Guy Ellery and Steve Ryan and the score was 5 all. On the eighth end Warren’s team scored five shots and from there on maintained the lead. On the last end Ron’s team played some great bowls but only managed four shots and Warren’s team ran out winners, 22 – 19.
Entries have now closed for the Major Singles and Major Pairs events and the draws are on display on the club notice board.
Australia Day Mini Carnival.
It was great to see fifty-six bowlers (the maximum number we could accommodate) filling the two greens on Australia Day with Aussie flags tee shirts and hat being the order of the day. The club was also pleased to receive a visit from the local Australia Day Ambassador, Susie Ellerman who presented the prize to the winning team.
Fourteen teams of four bowlers each played five matches with the place getters being decided by the number of games won and the best for and against aggregate score.
The winners on the day were Rob Irving, Gwenda Carty, Col Hayward and John Hodge with four wins and a draw and an aggregate of +51.
Second place went to Bob Freeman, Robert Cheney, Tony Peisley and Jim Jennings with four wins and +30.
Third place went to Graham Barby, Ron Hornery, Arthur Corbett and Col Mudie with four wins and +19.
Fourth place was won by a visiting team from Forbes comprised of Graeme Mowbray, Ali Cutcliffe, Grant Lambert and Lyall Strudwick with three wins and a draw and +20.
Total prize money on the day was $1040.
It was good to see so many club members attending the day but also we would like to thank the visitors from Forbes and Parkes Railway clubs for their support. It was also good to see some familiar faces that haven’t played for some time and we thank them also for their support.

The Raffle prizes were all donated and we thank the donors for their contribution to a great day.
I must also mention the great work done by the volunteers who prepare the greens, the club members who work so hard to organise these days and the kitchen staff who prepared such a great lunch – thank you one and all.
Social Bowls.
Saturday, January 28.
In very hot conditions a game of Pairs and one of Triples were played.
Col Woods and Jim Blake got off to a great start and after nine ends lead Greg Huggins and Gordon Dickson 8-3. The next five ends went to Greg and Gordon and starting the sixteenth end they had the lead 13-8 and over the last five ends held the lead to win the match 16 -12.
In the Triples match, the team of John Carr, Les Kent and George Bradley lead throughout to record a good win against John Davies, Steve Ryan and Bob Freeman.
The Prize for the day went to Warren wen to the winning triples team.
DISTRICT PENNANTS.
The Pennants season will commence on Sunday, March 5th and I will have details of the teams and our opponents in the next bulletin.
1300 BUGMAN Bowls.
The Competition will again be sponsored by 1300 Bugman and we thank them for their continued support.
The first game , next Thursday, February 2 will be a free, non-competition night so we look forward to seeing all our regulars, plus a few new teams on the night. Try to get to the club before 6pm so we can get organised to start at 6.30pm.
Teams are made up of three players and the cost is $10 per player (but not on the first night) and all equipment is available – all you need are flat sole shoes or play barefoot if you want to.
As usual, beer, soft drinks etc. will be available at the bar and snacks will be provided after the game.
Friday Night
The Badge Draw was not won last Friday and will be worth $1100 this week. The draw will take place after after the meat and voucher raffle.
As usual good pub style meals will be available at very reasonable prices.
