Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
MENS CLASSIC TRIPLES CARNIVAL
The weekend saw 24 teams contest the event, playing five games of 15 ends.
Parkes teams filled the first three places. Winners were:
1st – Col Hayward, Robert Corbett and Keith MacRae 5 wins + 38
2nd = John Davies, Graham Barby and Mark Dwyer 4 wins + 34
3rd – Graham Fliedner, Brett Frame and Paul Henry 4 wins + 18
4th – Barry Issac (Kew), Tony Bright and Phil Collins (Kew) 4 wins + 16
5th – Peter Mahoney (Camden), Mike Valentine and John Roffe (Camden) 3 and a half wins + 20
It was very pleasing to see the good number of teams from outside the district and also the teams from Parkes Railway Diggers Club come and support the event.
STATE CLUB CHALLENGE
The clubs Blue Team commence their challenge this weekend with matches against Wellington on Saturday and Millthorpe on Sunday.
The team is:
Singles – Kevin Hynds
Pairs – Mick Craft and Keith MacRae
Fours – Mike Valentine, Wally Grant, Greig Ball and Terry Hetherington
Manager – Pat Cooney
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
8 bowlers turned out to try to win the $1000 jackpot.
Bob Freeman and Rob Irving played Barrie Freeman and Keith Hutchison. In a close match Barrie and Keith ran out winners 11-9.
The other match saw Mick Blunt and Guy Ellery led all the way in defeating Mal Porter and Peter ten Cate 14-8.
Prize winners were Mick Blunt, Guy Ellery and Bob Freeman.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along next Sunday for a game, a sausage sizzle, and to be in the running for the $1000 jackpot.
SOCIAL
24 bowlers turned out on the long weekend Monday playing 4 games of turn-around triples.
Mick Blunt, Rhona Went and Graham Barby played Ron Murray, Helen Heraghty and Keith MacRae. Mick, Rhona and Graham held a big lead of 18-2 after 9 ends and went on to win the match 25-16.
Col Woods, Liz Byrne and Arthur Corbett were the dominant team in their match against Rob Irving, Maree Grant and Kevin Hynds. Col, Liz and Arthur won 14 ends in winning the match convincingly 29-12.
Bill Skinner, Ellie Hetherington and Wally Grant played Laurie Keane, John Dunn and Dave Johnson. Laurie, John and Dave held the lead 21-10 after 16 ends. Bill, Ellie and Wally then scored 10 shots on the next three ends to trail narrowly 20-21. Laurie, John and Dave then picked up one shot on each of the last two ends to win 23-20.
Norm Keane, Bernie Mitchell and Pat Cooney played Rose Mitchell, Chris Dunn and Tom Casey. After trailing 7-14 at the 13 end mark, Norm, Bernie and Pat won seven of the last eight ends to run out winners 19-15.
Major prize winners were Laurie Keane, John Dunn and Dave Johnson and the minor winners were Norm Keane, Bernie Mitchell and Pat Cooney.
Thursday saw 18 bowlers playing one game of triples and three games of pairs.
In the triples match Bob Freeman, Rob Irving and John Dunn played Tom Cole, Bill Skinner and Mike Valentine. This was a very tight match with the score 13all after 14 ends. Bob, Rob and John finished the stronger, running out winners 23-18.
John Keogh and Keith MacRae played Joe Crowley and Ray Jones. Trailing 7-13 after 14 ends, Joe and Ray won the next four ends to take the lead 16-13. John and Keith rallied and won the last three ends to run out victors 19-16.
Chris Dunn and Col Mudie played Gordon Dickson and Col Hayward. After the score was 10all, Chris and Col (Mudie) won six of the next seven ends to grab a seven shot lead and then held on to win 19-16.
In the last match Mick Craft and Phil Collins were too strong for Ron Murray and Gary McPhee. Mick and Phil only lost six ends in winning very convincingly 32-10. It was good to see Phil join us for a game while visiting from Kew.
Thursday’s major winners were Mick Craft and Phil Collins and the minor winners were John Keogh and Keith MacRae.
With a large number of bowlers playing in the triples carnival we only had 8 bowlers playing social bowls on Saturday.
Steve Mills and Gary McPhee had a keen tussle with Tom Cole and John Dunn. With the score narrowly in their favour 11-10 after 13 ends, Steve and Gary finished the stronger and ran out winners 20-13.
In the other match Col Woods and Luke Ramsay played Allan Wright and Dean Searl. Col and Luke only lost six ends in running out big winners 28-10. Col was named man of the match.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
Thursday night saw 48 bowlers for the twilight bowls warm-up night. It was pleasing to see a number of new teams as well as the more regular teams participating. In a couple of close matches Bat Girls were defeated by Spadgers 9-8, and Bowls Bros defeated Super Bees 13-11.
Major prize winners were Bowls Boys with the minor winners being Uniting Church. The lucky loser’s team was Millers.
Tomorrow will see the first round of the competition and anyone else interested in entering a team into the competition can do so by contacting the club on 68621146.
GENERAL
The club is hosting a visit from Forestville Bowling Club on Saturday 19th Oct. All members are encouraged to put their names in to play against our visitors. This is a mixed event with play to start at 1:30pm.
The bowls committee are implementing a number of changes to our social bowls.
Saturday social bowls will become a mixed event.
There will also be a change to the playing times. Up to and including Thursday 31st October, names to be in by 1:00pm with play to commence at 1:30pm. From Saturday 2nd November, names to be in by 12:30pm with play to commence at 1:00pm.
