Handicap Pairs Down To The Final

Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
HANDICAP PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
Great bowls and plenty of very close matches highlighted the handicap pairs championship played over the weekend through to the semi-final stage. Three first round matches were played on Saturday morning with the other 13 teams having a bye and going through to the second round. All matches went down to the last bowl.
Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington (+2) played Wally Austin and John Carr. Bernie and Terry had a great start to the match and led 22-8 after 14 ends. Wally and John came back strongly, winning the next six ends and scoring 15 shots to hit the lead 23-22. The last end saw Wally and John holding three shots before Bernie moved the jack for he and Terry to hold two shots. The skips last bowls did not change the head and Bernie and Terry won the match 24-23.
Gordon Dickson and Chris Dunn (+5) played John Dunn and Mike Valentine. This was a very close match with the score 17 all after 19 ends and then 18 all after 21 ends. An extra end was needed to decide the winner and it was Mike who played a great draw bowl to score one shot which gave the win to John and Mike 19-18.
Tom Furey and Nimo Mills (+4) played Gary McPhee and Kevin Hynds. Tom and Nimo held the lead 16-14 after 13 ends. Gary and Kevin won the next four ends and led 21-16. Great bowls from Tom and Nimo saw them score six shots on the last four ends to record a 23-21 win.
Saturday afternoon saw eight second round matches played.
Bruce Deland (sub) and Dean Searl only lost six ends in their big 34-13 win over Max Tomkins and Dave Johnson.
Greig Ball and Mark Dwyer won the last four ends to kick clear of Bob Riseborough and Graham Barby, winning 24-17.
John Hodge and Col Mudie scored six shots on the last two ends to defeat Ron Hornery and Geoff Freeman 26-16.
Noel Nicholson and John Ward played Wally Grant and Mick Craft. Noel and John led 18-10 after 13 ends and went on to win the match 24-17.
Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran played Tom Furey and Nimo Mills (+4). The lead changed five times before the score was 18 all after 16 ends. Wilbur and John then won four of the last five ends to win 26-20.
Alan Affleck and Joe Crowley (+2) played John Dunn and Mike Valentine. Alan and Joe only lost three of the first 15 ends to lead 22-4. John and Mike then scored 15 shots on the next four ends to only trail by three shots. Alan and Joe steadied to win the last two ends and record a 25-19 win.
Ron Murray and George Boatswain (+4) played John O’Malley and Steve Turner. Ron and George held a 21-18 lead after 15 ends. John and Steve won the next three ends to lead 24-21. Ron and George scored one shot on the next two ends to trail by one shot with one end to go. They managed to score two shots on the last end to record a very narrow 25-24 win.
Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington (+5) played Ted Wright and Arthur Corbett. With the score eight all after six ends, Bernie and Terry won the next eight ends to lead 18-8. Ted and Arthur fought back, winning five of the last seven ends, but were unable to bridge the gap. Bernie and Terry held on to win 22-18.
The quarter finals were played Sunday morning.
Ron Murray and George Boatswain (+5) played John Hodge and Col Mudie. This was a very even match with the score 19 all after 12 ends. John and Col then won seven of the last nine ends to run out 31-21 winners.
Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington (+3) played Noel Nicholson and John Ward. Noel and John got away to a good start and led 18-8 after 12 ends. Bernie and Terry won seven of the last nine ends but were unable to make up the difference. Noel and John hung on to win 22-18.
Alan Affleck and Joe Crowley (+3) played Bruce Deland (sub) and Dean Searl. This was a very close match with the score being tied on three occasions before the score was 18 all after 18 ends. Bruce and Dean scored four shots on the next two ends to lead 22-18. Alan and Joe managed three shots on the last end to just miss. Bruce and Dean winning 22-21.
Greig Ball and Mark Dwyer played Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran. In a low scoring match Wilbur and John led 10-4 after 10 ends. Greig and Mark then won six of the next seven ends to lead 14-11 and then held a 15-13 lead after 19 ends. Unfortunately for Mark he moved the jack for Wilbur and John to pick up shots on the last two ends. Wilbur and John winning the match 17-15.
Sunday afternoon saw two great semi-final matches where each match was won by one shot.
John Hodge and Col Mudie played Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran. Wilbur and John had the better start to the match and aided by three big scoring ends got out to lead 21-10 after 15 ends. John and Col stormed home winning the last six ends but failed by one shot. Wilbur and John hanging on to win 21-20.
Noel Nicholson and John Ward played Bruce Deland (sub) and Dean Searl. Noel and John held the lead until end 19 when it became 14 all. The next two ends were shared leaving the score 15 all with an extra end needed to decide the winner. Noel and John held one shot but John’s last bowl unfortunately moved the jack two centimetres to give the shot, and the match, to Bruce and Dean 16-15.
The final will be played next Saturday, September 13. Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran will be up against Dean Searl and either Warren Bevan or super sub Bruce Deland.
THURSDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
22 bowlers played four games of pairs and one game of triples.
In the triples game John Watson, Gordon Dickson and John Dunn played Don Littlewood, Wally Austin and Ron Hornery. Don, Wally and Ron had an early 13-5 lead and then led 18-15 after 16 ends. John, Gordon and John then won four of the last five ends to win the game 23-20.
Ted Wright and Mike Valentine played Bob Riseborough and Greig Ball. This was a very close game with the lead changing five times. Ted and Mike led by two shots going into the last end but it was Bob and Greig who won the last end, scoring three shots to win 19-18.
Noel Nicholson and Kevin Hynds played John Keogh and Graham Barby. John and Graham held a 16-2 lead after eight ends and went on to win 24-15.
Alan Affleck and John Ward played Bill Skinner and Col Mudie. This was another very close game with the lead changing nine times. Alan and John held a two shot margin with two ends to play. Bill and Col managed to score one shot on each of the last two ends to snatch a 22 all draw. Bill and Col won the ends 11-10.
Max Tomkins and John Corcoran played Mike Phillips and Geoff Freeman. Mike and Geoff opened up a big 25-3 lead after 12 ends and went on to win the game 33-14.
The major winners were Mike Phillips and Geoff Freeman and the minor winners were John Watson, Gordon Dickson and John Dunn.
SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
With the handicap pairs matches being play only 10 bowlers played social bowls. This gave a total of 43 bowlers for the day.
In the triples game Chris Dunn, Rob Irving and Kevin Hynds hung on to defeat Ray Jones, Gordon Dickson and Rhona Went 21-18.
The pairs game saw Wally Austin and Steve Ryan play Gary McPhee and Matthew Parker. The score was 11 all after 13 ends before Wally and Steve won five ends straight to lead 19-11 and go on to win 20-14.
Saturday prize winners came from handicap pairs teams with the major winners being Noel Nicholson and John Ward and the minor winners being Bernie Mitchell and Terry Hetherington.
There will be no social bowls this weekend because of the ladies pairs carnival.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
12 bowlers played three games of pairs.
Tom Furey and Chris Dunn scored two shots on the last end to snatch a 14 all draw with Rob Irving and Craig Henry.
Steve Ryan and Kevin Hynds won the last three ends to come from behind to defeat Keith Hutchison and Dave Buggie 13-9.
Mick Blunt and Mal Porter won the last two ends to defeat Kim Evans and Maureen Bailey 15-13.
Prize winners were Craig Henry, Rob Irving, Kevin Hynds, Dave Buggie and Steve Ryan. All other players won a small prize. The jackpot was not won and is $520 next week. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
PARKES BOWLING & SPORTS CLUB AGM
The AGM will be held on Monday, September 22 commencing at 7pm.
