Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
Pennants.
A mixed day for our Pennant sides this week.
The Grade 2 side hosted the Molong Club and after some very close games just went down on the aggregate board 51-59 losing on two rinks and having a draw on the third rink. Garry Carberry’s team played some great bowls to finish 17 all against Tim Wark’s team. In a close match Michael Went's team lost by one shot, 22-21 against Bernie Duduszko’s team. On the third rink Brett Frame’s team were beaten 13-20 by Robert Hamilton’s team.
The 5’s travelled to Canowindra and came away with wins on two of the three rinks. John Ward’s team had a good win 22-16. Dave Johnson’s team looked like losing when Canowindra were holding five shots on the last end but with his last bowl Dave managed to draw the shot to give his team the win, 20-19. Greg Townsend’s team went down narrowly, 17-19 but the side won the aggregate score 59-54.
The 7’s played at home against Forbes and had their best day of the season winning all three Rinks and the aggregate by the comfortable margin of 75-41. John Carr’s team won 21-16, Keith MacRae’s team won 20-14 and Steve “Nimo” Mills’ team got up 34-11.
Best of luck to all the teams in next week’s final round.
Club Championships.
Only two Championship games were played this week, both being Major Singles matches.
The first match turned out to be a comfortable win, 28-6, for Mark Dwyer against Gladrin Sun.
The other match went a marathon thirty-three ends and what a match it was. George Boatswain had the better of the early ends and lead Brett Frame 5-0 after the first three ends. George built on his lead and after eleven ends was in front 14-5. Brett gradually got into the game but it wasn’t until the twenty-third end that he caught up with George to level the scores 21 all. The scores see-sawed over the next few ends and were locked at 30 all after thirty-two ends. On a very tense final end Brett eventually came away with the shot he needed to win the match 31-30 and advanced to the next round.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Easter Monday, April 2.
A mini Social Carnival was played on Easter Monday and thirty-six players, including one visitor from Tasmania and five visitors from the Railway Bowling club had a great day playing two Pairs matches of ten ends each. In keeping with the “Social” atmosphere the teams were drawn from a hat as were the winners on the day. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Joyce and Rob Irving we had four prize winning teams and they were:
1st. place - Mark Dwyer and Gordon Dickson.
2nd place - Warren Bevan and Cherie Frame.
3rd place - Geoff Freeman and Janelle Ross.
4th place - Arthur Corbett and John Watson.
Thanks again to the sponsors, Joyce and Rob, and to the club and the ladies who prepared the after match “nibbles”. It was a great way to round off the Easter weekend and hopefully it may become an annual event.
Thursday, April 5.
On a great day for Bowls, four Pairs games and one Triples game were played.
The Triples match finished up in a 14all draw. With three ends to play, Keith MacRae, John Watson and Gordon Dickson had a 14-8 lead over John Carr, Bob Freeman and Rob Irving but John’s team scored six shots on the last three ends to tie the scores 14 all.
In a close match Ray Jones and John ????? had a win, 14-12, over Graham Dixon and Pat Cooney. I think the “John” was John Ward but we have so many “Johns” in the club I can’t be sure.
In other matches:
Col Hayward and Martin Tighe defeated Arthur Corbett and Graham Barby 22-15.
Ron Hornery and John Dunn beat Joe Crowley and Bill Skinner 24-18.
Greg Howlett and Jim Blake were too good for John Taylor and George Bradley, 22-15.
Prize winners on the day were Col Hayward and Martin Tighe and the Runners up were Greg Howlett and Jim Blake.
Saturday, March 24.
For the second week in a row, both greens were in use on Saturday when twenty Social players joined the four players engaged in Championship matches.
In the closest match of the day, Col Mudie and Martin Tighe scored a five on the second end to lead Keith MacRae and Rob Irving 5-1. They managed to hold on to the lead and with three ends to play were in front 19-14. The last three ends were won by Keith and Rob but they only scored four shots and were beaten 19-18.
In another close one, Les Kent and Greg Huggins just got home 24-19 against Rhona Went and Gordon Dickson.
In other matches:
John Taylor and Ron Hornery were too good for John Carr and John Dunn, 22-16.
Tom Furey and Geoff Freeman proved too strong for Col Hayward and Garry Carberry, 21-14.
John Ward and Rob Tinker had a win over Arthur Corbett and Chris Dunn, 22-12.
The lucky Rink prize went to Tom Furey and Geoff Freeman and the Runnersup were Mark Dwyer and Pat Cooney (Marker for the Championship Singles game)
