CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
A semi-final of the Minor Fours was played on Saturday.
Norm Keane, Mike Valentine, John Hodge and Greig Ball were up against Tom Cole, Sheldon Orr, Craig Henry and Greg Fisher.
The early ends were very closely contested with the scores being 3/3 after five ends, 5/5 after eight ends and team Ball holding a slim lead of 10/8 after twelve ends. Team Ball then won the next five ends to establish a ten shot lead which proved too big a hurdle for team Fisher. Norm, Mike, John and Greig going on to win the match 20/11.
A semi-final of the Major Fours was played on Sunday.
Steve Turner, Paul Henry, Mark Dwyer and Brett Frame played Ted Wright, Col Mudie, Graham Barby and John Davies.
Team Davies gained an early 9/0 lead only to see team Frame claw back to 9/8 after 8 ends.
Scores fluctuated during the next twelve ends with the score showing a lead to team Davies of 21/18. The last end saw some great bowls from Steve and Paul to give team Frame the advantage.
Team Davies could not respond and team Frame scored five shots to win 23/21. The only time Steve, Paul, Mark and Brett lead in the match was on the very last end.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
8 bowlers turned out trying to win the $1000 jackpot.
Elaine Miller and Greg Fisher, after leading 14/0, went on to defeat Callan Job and Kevin Hynds 19/5.
Tom Cole and Peter tenCate had a real battle against Guy Ellery and Rob Irving. The final score was a win to Tom and Peter 18/14.
The jackpot was not won, so remains at $1000 for the next Sunday Morning Jackpot on 1st September.
SOCIAL
24 bowlers turned out on Thursday playing six games of Pairs.
Ted Wright and Greig Ball scored two three shot ends late in the match to defeat Bob Freeman and Graham Barby 20/15.
Rob Irving and Col Hayward scored a comfortable win over Ricky Frame and John Corcoran 26/15. It was good to see Ricky having a game.
Noel Nicholson and Terry Hetherington scored seven shots in the last three ends in defeating John Dunn and Col Mudie 22/18.
Gordon Dickson and Dave Johnson combined well to defeat Bill Skinner and Keith MacRae 27/15.
Norm Keane and Mike Valentine had a ten shot lead at the halfway mark and held on to defeat Tom Cole and John Hodge 26/19.
In the last match, with the scores level 18/18 after seventeen ends, Alan Wright and John Ward won three of the last four ends in defeating Joe Crowley and Gary McPhee 23/21.
Thursday prize winners were Rob Irving and Col Hayward and the runners-up were Noel Nicholson and Terry Hetherington.
Saturday saw 20 social bowlers grace the green.
With big margins being most prevalent, there were 10 bowlers very happy with their effort and 10 others wondering what went wrong!!
After twelve ends Steve Turner and Tony Bright held a narrow lead of 14/12 over Bob Freeman and John O’Malley. Steve and Tony then won eight of the last nine ends to score a 34/13 win.
Ron Fisher and Geoff Freeman led Bill Skinner and John Davies 10/9 after 13 ends. Bill and John then combined very well to win eight of the last nine ends to run out big winners 26/11.
Alan Affleck and Arthur Corbett, after leading 22/0, went on to win comfortably 30/11 over Joe Crowley and John Ward.
Gordon Dickson and Robert Tinker came from a long way back to defeat Keith Alexander and Warren Bevan. Keith and Warren lead 16/4 after 9 ends. Gordon and Robert then won ten of the last twelve ends to run out winners 25/18.
In the last match the score card was not handed in. The scorer, no name mentioned, had to leave early and apparently still had the card in his pocket. The other players informed me of the result.
Bruce Deland and Steve Mills had a comfortable win over Col Woods and Keith MacRae 24/14.
Prize winners on the day were Steve Turner and Tony Bright with the runners-up being Alan Affleck and Arthur Corbett.
GENERAL
There will be no social bowls this weekend, 24/25 Aug, due to the Women’s Classic Pairs Tournament.
Windmills Restaurant is holding a special Fathers Day luncheon on Sunday 1st September at 12 noon. The cost for a two course meal is only $20. Bookings essential.
