Here is the latest from the Bowlie.
ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The Sectional Finals of the Zone 4 Pairs Championships were played last weekend.
The Open Pairs event was split into two groups and the Club was represented by Tom Furey and Brett Frame (substituting for Garry Carberry) at Grenfell and by Paul & Mick Went at Orange City.
At Orange, Paul and Mike got through to the finals and came from behind to defeat Ben Callaway and Lee Stinson from the Orange City Club. Congratulations Paul and Mick and we wish you the best of luck in the Finals at Cowra next weekend.
Tom and Baldy got through to the Semi-Finals but went down to Martin Betcher and Ray Walter from the Grenfell Club.
Our Club was also represented In the Presidents Pairs at Eugowra, where Gary McPhee and Greg Howlett were knocked out in the first round.
In the Seniors Pairs at Parkes Railway Club, Steve Nimo Mills and George Bradley came up against club-mates Col Hayward and Graham Barby in the first round and Col and Graham had a comfortable win and went on to get through to the Final but were defeated by John Joyce and Steve Galvin from the Grenfell Club.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Only one game of Minor Singles was played during the week and Rob Irving had a comfortable win, 31-9, against Gladrin Sun.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, May 1.
Twenty-two bowlers turned out to play four games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
Gary McPhee and Greg Howlett won the first two ends to lead Col Hayward and Graham Barby, 2-0. After twelve ends the scores were level, 13 all but Col and Graham scored six shots over the next three ends to open up the biggest lead of the match, 19-13. However, with one end to play the scores were again level, 21 all. In a fairly tense last end Gary and Greg scored four shots to claim victory, 25-21.
Col Mudie and John Watson had a five shot win against John Ward and Ted Wright.
In their match Keith MacRae and George Bradley scored five shots on the first end against Jim Blake and Col Woods and were never headed, running out winners 27-18.
Mick Went and Martin Tighe proved too strong for John Corcoran and Ron Hornery, 24-14.
In the Triples match, Trevor Harvey, John Dunn and Gordon Dickson opened up a 10-0 lead after six ends against Steve Ryan, Greg Huggins and Bob Freeman. By the end of seventeen ends, Steve’s team had taken the lead 16-15 and went on to win the match 22-17.
The winning rink prize went to Keith MacRae and George Bradley and the Runners-Up were Gary McPhee and Greg Howlett.
Saturday, May 19.
In the absence of the Bowlers involved in the Zone Championships, eighteen players contested three pairs and One Triples match.
The Triples match turned out to be a thriller. The team of John Carr, Greg Huggins and Gordon Dickson lead 7-0 after the first four ends against Mark Dwyer, Bob Freeman and Col Woods. It wasn’t until the fifteenth end that Marks team drew level at twelve all and with two ends to play the scores were locked at 15 all. Both teams won one of the last two ends and the match finished in a 17 all draw. Marks team claimed bragging rights having won 12 ends to 9.
In a Pairs match, Rob Irving and John Dunn scored a narrow victory against Col Mudie and Jim Blake. Scores had been level four times during the match and with one end to play were locked at 19 all. Rob and John scored two shots on the last end to win the match 21-19.
Matt Parker and John Taylor were too good for Guy Ellery and John Watson.
Ron Hornery and Ted Wright had a win against John Ward and Les Kent.
Winners on the day were Matt Parker and John Taylor.
Classic Pairs Tournament.
Entries are still being taken for the Classic Pairs event on next weekend, June 2/3. Details are available at the club.
