The pennant season got under way at the weekend with three of our sides in action.
It was unusual with all sides having the same score 41/2 to 11/2 in their respective matches, the No1 and No6 sides winning and the No7 team unfortunately going down. The No1 side were at home to West Dubbo and kicked their campaign of with a gutsy win. Baldy Frame’s side led the way with a powerful display winning 32-15; Dane Bland and his boys were able to come home late for a 16 all tie, but Robert Corbett’s team lost 16-21, the final score on the big board Parkes 67 to 56.

Our No.6 side had a fine away win against Peak Hill 58-46, with Terry Hetherington’s side leading the way 27-12 winners. Ken Walsh and his boys rallied to force a hard fought 17 all draw but Bruce Orr’s side went down narrowly 14-17.

In the other game at Parkes our No7 side found the Condobolin outfit just a little strong and went down 53-76. Mike Parkes led his side to a thrilling one shot 20-19 victory and Graham Dixons team held on for a 19all draw but Wally Austin and his boys lost 14-38.

This week all sides are in action with the No1 team travelling to Dubbo for a clash with Dubbo Railway. The No4 side will play a double header at home to open their pennant campaign, they will play Bourke on Saturday afternoon at 1pm and then back up and play Cobar on Sunday Morning at 9.30am. Also at home will be the No6 and No7 sides as they will play Forbes and Parkes Railway respectively.

A huge program of events was played in both championship matches and social bowls. Heading the day was major pair’s matches and looking very impressive were John Corcoran and Colin Mudie as they raced away for a convincing 32-10 win against Bruce Orr and Steve Ryan. Also showing good form was Baldy Frame and Paul Henry with a 28-9 triumph over Ray Jones and Craig Henry. The paring of Jim Buckley and Tom Casey could be one of the major contenders getting off to a great start winning 23-15 against Tony Bright and Terry Hetherington. Andrew Trotman and Matt Frame won in fine style and also look to be contenders defeating Ted Wright and Chris Dunn 26-11. Robert Corbett and Noel Nicholson were made to work hard in their 25-15 win over a game Craig Cusack and Ryan McLuckie. Another pair to catch the eye were brothers Eddie and Peter McPhee, with a clinical display they outed the very highly fancied Dane Bland and Mark Dwyer 22-8.

In minor pairs match Mike Parkes and Bernie Mitchell came from the clouds to snatch a thrilling 22-21 win over Dave Worthington and Guy Bennett. Steve Turner won a hard fought minor singles match against Dave Sheehan 33-23. And during the week Tom Casey defeated John Ward 31-25 in major singles.

In social bowls the best game was a 16all tie between Greig Ball and Joe Crowley against John Ward and Alan Afflick.
