CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
In a Semi-Final of the Major Pairs Championships played on Saturday morning, Mike and Paul Went won the first two ends to lead Brett Frame and Paul Henry, 2-0. From there on they dominated the game and advanced to the final with a comfortable 31-6 win.
After lunch Paul Went played a Major singles match against Graham Barby and advanced into the final with a 31-17 win.
Also on Thursday, Wilbur Harris and Martin Tighe played a Minor Singles Championship. The early ends were fairly even and after twenty-six ends Wilbur lead 23-18. Over the next three ends Wilbur found some good form and scored 10-0 to advance to the next round.
On Monday, June 11, in a Minor Pairs Match Steve Mills and George Bradley advanced to the next round with a hard fought 23-19 win against Les Kent and John Watson.
In another close Minor Pairs match, Gary McPhee and Martin Tighe just got home against Greg Huggins and Gordon Dickson, 20-16.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Monday, June 11.
It was a pleasure to welcome to our Club, Carrol and David Frost, visiting from the South Coast of NSW. They were joined by fourteen members to play two games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
By a great coincidence, both Pairs games finished with the same score lines.
John Ward and Carrol Frost started well against Rhona Went and John Dunn to lead 10-1 after seven ends. With four ends to play, John and Carrol still had the lead, 15-8 and although Rhona and John won the last four ends they could not quite bridge the gap and went down by a single shot, 14-15.
In the other match Steve Turner and Guy Ellery lead 8-1 after four ends against Geoff Freeman and Ray Jones. By the end of the seventeenth end Geoff and Ray had taken the lead 15-10 and although Steve and Guy won the last four ends Geoff and Ray hung on for a 15-14 win.
The Triples match was also a close one and Greg Howlett, Brenda Davies and David Frost just got home against Rob Irving, Bob Freeman and Chris Dunn, 20-17.
The winning rink prize went to the triples team and John Ward and Carrol Frost were the runners-up.
Thursday, June 14.
Fifteen members were joined by Gary Phillips, visiting from the Parkes Railway Club, to play three games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
Guy Ellery and Ian Simpson combined well for a narrow win against Col Mudie and Rob Irving, 23-20.
In another fairly close match with John Ward and Ray Jones defeated Geoff Freeman and Graham Barby 22-15.
The other Pairs match was won by Gary Phillips and Joe Crowley against Keith MacRae and John Dunn.
The winning rink prize went to Greg Huggins and Mike Keane and the Runners-Up were Graham Barby and John Dunn.
The Triples match saw Trevor Harvey, Bob Freeman and Jim Blake find form in the later stages to get over the top of Col Woods, George Bradley and Bill Skinner, 20-15.
Saturday, June 16.
In freezing, windy conditions twenty-two hardy bowlers braved the conditions to play four games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
The Triples team of Keith MacRae, Joe Crowley and George Bradley got away to a great start scoring 12-0 in the first seven ends. Somehow, fortunes were reversed and John Ward, Rob Irving and Bob Freeman scored thirteen shots winning two of the next three ends to level the scores 13 all. Keith’s team won four of the next six ends to lead 17-16 but from there on it was all one way traffic and John’s team ran out winners 24-17.
In a hard fought Pairs match, Arthur Corbett and Ray Jones had a narrow 21-19 over Col Mudie and John Taylor.
In other matches:
Geoff Freeman and George Boatswain were too good for Col Hayward and Gordon Dickson.
Gar McPhee and Rhona Went defeated Greg Howlett and John Dunn.
Dave Johnson and Steve Mills had a comfortable win against Tom Furey and Maureen Baillie.
The winning rink prize went to Dave Johnson and Steve Mills and the team of John Ward, Bob Freeman and Rob Irving were the Runners-up.
Sunday Bowls.
I would like to remind all members that for the next few weeks we will be playing social bowls on Sunday afternoons, usual starting time, names in by 12-30pm for a 1.00pm start. Proceeds of the day will go to the Grade 2 Pennants side to help with expenses on their trip to Sydney to represent the Club in the State Pennant Finals.
Badge Draw.
The Badge Draw was not won and is now worth $2,500. The next draw will be on Friday night after the the main raffle around 8:pm. Good Pub style meals are available so come along for a great night, a chance to win a meat tray or voucher and maybe go home $2500 better off.
