CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The first semi-final of the Major Triples was played on Friday October 27.
Tom Furey, Dave Johnson and Gary McPhee started strongly to lead Steve “Nimo” Mills, Bernie Mitchell and George Bradley 6-1 after five ends. Steve’s team gradually got back into the match and after thirteen ends the scores were level at 12 all. After 18 ends the score was 18-15 in favour of Tom’s team but they scored six shots on the next three ends to take a winning lead 24-15. Steve’s team won the last four ends but could only manage five shots and Tom, Dave and Gary advanced to the final, winning 24-20.
Two Handicap Singles matches were played.
On Thursday, Mike Valentine had a convincing win against Steve “Nimo” Mills and scored the 25 shots needed for victory in seventeen ends.
On Saturday, Greg Huggins took advantage of his four shot handicap advantage and after seven ends lead Wilbur Harris 13-4. Wilbur gradually found form and after twenty-four ends claimed the match 25-18.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, October 26.
Twenty-four players (including two visitors from Orange City Bowling Club) turned out for six games of Pairs with one very close game, one fairly close and the others not very close at all.
John Hodge and Joe Crowley got away to a great start and led John Ward and John Carr 9-1 after six ends. The two Johns then found form and by the end of the thirteenth end had drawn level 12 all. With the help of a six on the fifteenth end John and Joe regained the lead, 21-12 after sixteen ends. Although the two Johns won four of the last five ends they could not quite bridge the gap and John and Joe ran out winners 22-21.
In a low scoring game (with fourteen of the twenty-one ends being won by a single shot) Bernie Mitchell and John Watson had a close match against Les Kent and Jim Blake. Les and Jim had the better of the early ends but Bernie and John took the lead after eight ends and were never headed to run out winners 16-12.
Other results were:
Clint Gamble (visiting from Orange) and Ray Jones were too strong for Col Mudie and Gladrin Sun.
Keith MacRae and George Bradley had a good win against Steve Ryan and Gordon Dickson.
Arthur Corbett and Greg Hough (also from Orange) had a convincing win over Ron Hornery and Greg Huggins.
Col Hayward and Rob Irving proved too good for Geoff Freeman and Guy Ellery.
The Winners on the day were Joe Crowley and John Hodge and the Runners-up prize went to Keith MacRae and George Bradley.
Saturday, October 28.
