Here is the latest from the Bowlie
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, May 26 two Minor Singles matches were played.
Gary McPhee got away to a great start in his match against George Boatswain. After five ends Gary led 15-0 and after eighteen ends took out the match 29-12.
Rob Irving had the better of the early ends against Greg Howlett but by the ninth end Greg had taken the lead 9-7. Both players were showing great form and, scores had been level on a few occasions, but it wasn’t until the twenty-eighth end that Rob regained the lead 25-23. After thirty-four ends Rob still lead by two shots but Greg played some great bowls on the next end to score the maximum four shots and win the match 31-29.
Also on Saturday, Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris had a comfortable win in the Minor Pairs against John Dunn and Bob Freeman, winning 23-6.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, May 24.
A good field of twenty-eight players turned out on a good day for Bowls.
It was good to see Gary Phillips back on the green after a long absence and to welcome Mike Phillips and Geoff Lenard, visiting from the Railway Club.
Seven games of Pairs were played with three very close games
Guy Ellery and Trevor Harvey had a tough match against Col Hayward and John Dunn. After thirteen ends Col and John led 14-6 but Guy and Trevor won the next six ends to lead 18-14 with two ends to play. On the next end Col and John scored four shots to level the scores but, in a close final end, Guy and Trevor scored one shot to win the match, 19-18.
The same score line resulted in the close match won by Arthur Corbett and Ted Wright against Keith MacRae and Martin Tighe. With two ends to play Arthur and Ted led 19-15 and lost the last two ends but just hung on to win 19-18.
After trailing for most of the match, Tom Furey and Ray Jones levelled the score, 16 all, against Gary McPhee and Rob Irving, with two ends to play. Scoring single shots on each of the last, very tense, two ends, Gary and Rob claimed victory 18-16.
In other matches:
Col Mudie and Graham Barby had a win against Geoff Freeman and Gary Phillips.
Geoff Lenard and George Bradley had a comfortable win against Ron Hornery and Col Woods.
Steve Nimo Mills and John Watson proved too good for John Taylor and Gordon Dickson.
John Ward and Jim Blake defeated Mike Phillips and Greg Huggins.
The winning rink prize went to John Ward and Jim Blake and the Runners-Up were Gary McPhee and Ray Jones.
Saturday, May 26.
Two games of Pairs and two games of Triples were played.
In one of the Triples matches, the score finished at 22 all and Mark Dwyer, Gordon Dickson and Rob Tinker claimed bragging rights against Tom Furey, Steve Ryan and Greg Townsend, having won the ends, 11-10. However, the card indicates that a protest was entered by Tom’s team although there is no mention of the outcome. I will keep you posted if I get any further information.
The other Triples match resulted in a comfortable win for Les Kent, Ray Jones and Janine Ross against John Ward, John Taylor and Jan McPhee.
In another close game, Col Mudie and Steve Nimo Mills won thirteen ends by one shot to just hold on against Geoff Freeman and Jim Blake, 13-11.
Col Hayward and Col Woods proved too good for Arthur Corbett and Ted Wright.
Winners on the day were Col Hayward and Col Woods and the Runner-up prize went to the Triples team of John Ward, John Taylor and Jan McPhee.
Classic Pairs Tournament.
Entries for the Open Classic Pairs event, to be held next weekend, June 2/3 close on Thursday, May 31.
Entry fee is $100 per team which includes lunch on both days.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from Casey Surveying and Design, Parkes Courier Services and Telescope Tyres, total prize money is $3,000, with $1,000 going to the winning team and down to $200 for the fifth placed team and three mystery prizes of $100 to be drawn on the day.
