Major Pairs Title Decided

Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
Last Thursday was a beautiful sunny day for the 20 bowlers who took part in five games of pairs. Steve Clegg and John Davies 26 defeated Rob Irving and Matthew Parker 13. This game was closer than the scores indicate as the losers gave away 14 shots in four ends. Ray Jones and Steve Mills 16 defeated John Dunn and John Corcoran 13. The winners winning just10 ends. Gordon Dickson and Gary Phillips 27 defeated Ian Simpson and John Ward 14. John after winning the first end was only able to win 8 of the 21 ends. Geoff Leonard and Greg Howlett winning 15 of the 21 ends smashed John Watson and Geoff Freeman 30 to 9. Greg Huggins and Col Hayward 20 defeated Jim Blake and Tom Fury 19. Whilst Jim & Tom lost the game they won the majority of the 21 ends played, well done to the losers in an exciting game. Another very close game Bill Skinner and John Dunn 19 defeated Bob Freeman and Colin Mudie 17. Here again the losers won the majority of the ends played in a very close game. Winners on the day were Steve Clegg and John Davies whilst the runners up was won by Ray Jones and Steve Mills.
On Saturday a total of 30 bowlers took part, 6 were involved in two championship matches and 24 played 6 games of social bowls. In the championship matches in the singles game Steve Turner played John Watson. After two ends the score was one all and from this point Steve took control of the game finished up running out winner 31 to 13. The other pairs games was between Tom Casey and Gary Carberry and Paul & Michael Went and after 9 ends Michael & Paul led 9 shots to 8 when Garry & Tom picked up 6 shots and were never headed winning the game 26 to 16 after 20 ends.
In the social games Maureen Baillie &. Keith MacRae played Brenda Davies & Greg Howlett and after six, nine,18 & 20 ends the scores were level. There was never more than 3 shots the difference throughout the game. However Maureen & Keith picked up two shots on the last end to win the game. Rob Irving & Mark Dwyer played Greg Huggins & John Davies. John and Greg led all the way to the 17 end when the scores were 16 all then Rob & Mark picked up 5 shots on the last 4 ends to win the game 21 to 18. Mark also was able to achieve the only resting toucher for the day. John Taylor and John Ward played Jim Blake and Ray Jones in another very close game and after 17 ends the score was 16 all. Whilst the last 4 ends were shared two each the two Johns ran out winners 21 to 19. In other games Colin Woods & Matthew Parker defeated Bill Skinner and Arthur Corbett 22 to 16. Les Kent Tom Fury defeated John Dunn & Joe Crowley 35 to 15, Gordon Dickson & Colin Mudie defeated Martin Tighe & Steve Mills 30 to 8.
On Sunday two championship matches were played. In the major triples between Tony Riordan Bruce Orr Steve Ryan 27 defeated Rob Irving John Ward Arthur Corbett 13. Whilst this is a comprehensive win for Steve of the 25 ends played Arthur won 10. The major difference was Steve picked up 16 shots over four ends.
In a social match Bob Freeman Martin Tighe Dave Johnson 19 defeated Greg Huggins Steve Mills Greg Townsend 17. Whilst the score was close Greg won 11 ends to 8. Whilst I am told 28 players participated throughout the day cards for 12 players only have not been handed in.
Bowlers are reminded Zone 4 singles championships commence next Saturday 7th July. One section will be played ast the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club. Eight markers are required and names will be taken next Thursday. There will also plenty of room for social bowls. A section is also being played at the Railway Diggers during the same weekend. Draw for all sections of the singles was undertaken at the Zone 4 meeting 23rd June and has been distributed to all clubs on last Sunday.
A further reminded to all bowlers a new roster has been printed for distribution and comes into operation from 5th July. If you have not got your copy please pick up at the club.
