CLUB CHAMPIONSIPS
Mixed Fours Championship
On Sunday, November 25 the team of Mike Went, Robyn Morgan, Tom Casey and Rhona Went played a semi-final match against Gary McPhee, Greg Howlett, Kim Evans and Jan McPhee.
After six ends Mike’s team had the lead 4-3 and then won three of the next four ends to extend the lead to 15-6. Gary’s team gradually got back into the match winning seven of the next eight ends and only trailed by two shots with three ends to play. Mike’s team scored singles on the next two ends and going into the last end Gary’s team needed four shots to send the match into an extra end. With Jan McPhee leading off with two great bowls Gary’s team held four shots but, with his last bowl, Mike cut it back to three shots and his team advanced to the final with an 18-17 win.
Mixed Pairs Championship
On Saturday, November 24, a semi-final of this competition was played.
Pat Cooney and Dave Johnson had a very close struggle against John and Brenda Davies. John and Brenda had the better of the first ten ends to lead 8-6 but Pat and Dave won the next four ends to lead 12-8. On the fifteenth end John and Brenda scored four shots to level the score line, 12 all. Scores were fairly even over the next few ends but on the second last end John and Brenda scored another four shots and won the last end to advance to the final with a 19-15 win.
Handicap Pairs Championship
On Saturday, November 24, in a semi-final of this event Gary McPhee and Jim Blake had a two shot handicap advantage against Arthur Corbett and Rob Irving. At one stage Gary and Jim had a five shot lead but on the fourteenth end Arthur and Rob scored five shots to take the lead for the first time in the match, 15-12. They went on to win the next five ends and ran out winners 24-13.
On Sunday, November 25 the second semi-final was played.
Dave Johnson and Gladrin Sun had the advantage of a one shot handicap differential against John Ward and Rob Tinker (substituting for Graham Dixon). The early ends were fairly even but after ten ends John and Rob had opened up a lead of 12-7 and went on to win the match 23-13.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday, November 22.
In spite of the blustery wind and dust storm, two games of pairs and one game of triples were played, all resulting in very close scores.
Tom Furey and Martin Tighe had the better of the early ends in their match against John Ward and Rob Irving and after seven ends lead 6-3. However, John and Rob won five of the next seven ends to lead by one shot, 10-9 and scored five shots on the fifteenth end to open up the biggest lead of the match, 15-9. With two ends to play John and Rob lead 19-14 but on the twentieth end Tom and Martin picked up one shot and on the last end scored the four shots they needed to tie the match 19 all. At this stage Tom and Martin could have claimed “bragging rights” having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played but, they sportingly agreed to an extra end to decide the result and John and Rob scored two shots to claim victory 21-19.
In another close Pairs match Keith MacRae and John Carr lead Gary McPhee and Chris Dunn 16-5 after fourteen ends. Gary and Chris fought back winning the next six ends to level the scores, 16 all, with one end to play but could not sustain their run and Keith and John took the last end to win 17-16.
In the Triples match, Col Mudie, Mal Porter and John Dunn lead 7-2 after four ends against Geoff Freeman, Jim Blake and Greg Huggins. It wasn’t until the twelfth end that Geoff’s team took the lead, 12-10. From there on the score see-sawed, with never more than a couple of shots in it and Geoff’s team held on to win the match 17-16.
Saturday, November 24.
It was good to see all seven rinks of the middle green in action as twenty two social bowlers joined those playing championship matches. It was also good to welcome Ray Mills visiting from Victoria. Hope you enjoyed your stay with your brother Steve.
Results of the Social games were:
Keith MacRae and John Dunn 21 – Tom Furey and Bob Freeman 18
Col Mudie and Wes Westcott 20 – Ron Hornery and John Wright 17
John Carr and Mal Porter 22 – Martin Tighe and John Watson 14
Rob Tinker and Gordon Dickson had a comfortable win against the brothers Steve and Ray Mills.
In a close Triples match, Ray Jones, Ian Simpson and Lorraine Baker scored one on the last end to tie the match against John Ward, Greg Huggins and Valmai Westcott, 20 all.
