Here is the latest from the Bowlie.
Pennants.
Not a good day for Bowls with high temperatures and strong winds but on Sunday the Grade 2 side travelled to Mudgee and came home with a great result winning two of the three rinks for a nine points to one win. Garry Carberry’s team won by 14 shots, but Mark Dwyer’s team lost by the same margin. On the third rink Tom Furey’s team proved the difference between the two sides winning its game by 2 shots.
Grade 5 travelled to Narromine and in a close match went down by 9 points to one with an aggregate score of 63-57 in Narromine’s favour. Col Mudie’s team won 22-14, Warren Bevan’s team lost 21-30 and John Ward’s team also lost 14-19.
At Condobolin, the Grade 7 side won two rinks but the aggregate score was tied at 63 all, giving us a win, 5.5 points to 4.5. Steve Mill’s team had a win, 25-16 and John Carr’s team got up in a close game 21-19. On the third rink John Taylor’s team went down 17-28.
Congratulations to all players and good luck for next week when the 2’s travel to Cowra, the 5’s are at home to Parkes Railway and the 7’s are away at Parkes Railway.
Club Championships.
One game of Major Singles and two games of Major Pairs were played during the week.
In the Major Singles match between Matt Parker and Greg Townsend the scores were level, 8 all after eight ends. On the ninth end Matt scored 4 shots and gradually increased his lead and after twenty five ends was ahead 27-17. On the next end Greg scored four shots but Matt maintained his lead and after twenty-nine ends the score was 29-22. Greg again found form and scored nine shots on the next three ends to advance to the next round with a 31-29 win.
In another close match Col Mudie and John Carr started well in a Major Pairs match against Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley. After five ends Col and John lead 10-1 and it wasn’t until the fifteenth end that “Nimo” and George took the lead 14-13. On the nineteenth end Col and John regained the lead, 19-17. The next end proved decisive. With Col and John holding one shot, with the last bowl of the end, “Nimo” moved the jack back and picked up five shots. The last end went to Col and John by one shot but “Nimo” and George got through to the next round, winning 22-20.
The other Major Pairs match saw the father and son team of Warwick and Matt Parker have a comfortable win, 26-12, against Steve Ryan and Bruce Orr.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, March 15.
It was good to see John Hodge back on the green after his recent absence due to health problems, although he shared a spot with Rob Irving, joining Ray Jones, in a Pairs match against John Taylor and John Dunn. In a close match Ray and Rob/ John defeated the other two Johns 17-14.
Les Kent and Steve Ryan just got up against John Ward and Joe Crowley, 19-16.
In another Pairs match Jim Blake partnered Tony Threlfall (visiting from Freemantle W.A.) but found Geoff Freeman and Chris Dunn too strong going down 11-27.
In a Triples match, Gary McPhee, Graham Dixon and Graham Barby were too good for John Corcoran, Greg Huggins and Ron Hornery, winning 23-16.
Winners on the day were the triples team of Gary and the two Grahams and the Runner-up prize went to Ray Jones and Rob Irving/John Hodge.
Saturday, March 17.
For the second week running we had both greens in play with five games of Pairs and one game of Triples as well as the Major Pairs Championship match.
One game resulted in a close score-line, one was fairly close but wide margins were the order of the day.
In the Pairs match between Col Hayward and Liz Byrne and Tom Furey and Rhona Went neither side were able to lead by more than two shots and in the end Col and Liz got up by one shot, 15-14.
John Davies and John Carr had a fairly close win, 18-13, against Mark Dwyer and Rob Tinker.
Other winners were;
Dave Johnson and Rob Irving against Keith MacRae and Ray Jones.
Col Woods and Alan Affleck against Joe Crowley and Greg Huggins.
John Ward and John Taylor against Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley.
John Dunn and Greg Howlett and his partner Rose against Bernie Mitchell, Gordon Dickson and Bob Freeman.
The Winning Rink went to Warwick and Matt Parker and The Runner-up prize went to John Carr and John Davies.
Twilight Bowls.
Sorry, but I can’t give any details of the results of last Thursday’s matches – my memory is failing and I forgot to pick up the score cards but a great night was had by all and as usual Tom Furey and his helpers put on a great supper as well as providing hot dogs during the play. Thanks again fellas.
Next week is the final night for this year and as usual will be a free night so we look forward to seeing everyone on the night.
GENERAL.
The club supports the Reedy Creek Cricket teams and the PB&SC Cricket team and it was good to see all three Grades in the Finals last Saturday. Congratulations to all three grades and in particular the B Grade side on their great win.
