Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
Social bowls played over the holiday period was well supported by both local bowlers and visitors. A total of 138 bowlers played over this period.
Boxing Day saw 12 bowlers play three games of pairs.
Ron Hornery and Keith MacRae went on a scoring spree which saw them score 27 shots in seven ends to open up a huge lead of 32-6 after 13 ends. They then went on to defeat Ray Jones and John Ward 37-14.
Trailing 11-0 after three ends, Mike Valentine and Col Mudie won 15 of the next 17 ends to defeat Gordon Dickson and Kevin Hynds 33-13.
The last game saw Steve Turner and Dave Johnson up against Rob Irving and Gary McPhee. This was a very close game throughout. Steve and Dave trailed 18-15 after 17 ends. They then won the next three ends to grab a narrow 19-18 lead with one end to play. Rob and Gary rose to the occasion and scored three shots on the last end to win 21-19.
Prize winners on the day were Rob Irving and Gary McPhee.
31 bowlers played five games of pairs and two triples on Saturday, December 27.
In a triples game Alan Affleck played lead for both sides. He teamed with Craig Henry and Dave Johnson to defeat himself, Wally Grant and Steve Turner 23-20. Alan, Craig and Dave trailed 17-12 before winning five of the last seven ends to grab the win.
A seven shot end helped Bill Skinner, Nimo Mills and Arthur Corbett defeat Allan Wright, Rob Irving and Wally Austin 19-17.
Ron Fisher and Dean Searl were opposed to Rhona Went and Warren Bevan. In a see-sawing event Ron and Dean led 11-8 after 12 ends. Rhona and Warren then scored nine shots on the next three ends to lead 17-11. Ron and Dean stormed home, winning the last six ends, to take the game 22-17.
John Hodge and Geoff Freeman scored eight shots on the last three ends to consolidate their lead over Ron Murray and Gary McPhee. The final score was 24-11.
In a game which saw Wilbur Harris use three different sets of bowls, he and Keith MacRae were far too strong for Gordon Dickson and Kevin Hynds. It certainly showed Wilbur’s ability to adapt to different bowls. The final score was 27-14.
Ron Hornery and Col Hayward led all the way in their close 22-16 win over Chris Dunn and Warwick Parker.
Ray Jones and Mike Valentine had a good 23-13 win over Vic McGlashan and John Ward.
Major prize winners were Ron Hornery and Col Hayward with the minor prize winners being John Hodge and Geoff Freeman.
New Years Day saw 25 bowlers take to the green.
Alan Affleck led for both sides in a triples game. He teamed with Les Kent and Kevin Hynds to defeat himself, Chris Dunn and Mike Valentine 27-16.
Ray Jones and Col Hayward won the last three ends to score a narrow 19-16 win over Wally Grant and Dave Johnson.
The next game saw Ron Hornery and John Ward up against Vic McGlashan (Forster) and John Hodge. This was a very close match which saw the lead change six times and then saw the score 19 all after 18 ends. Visitor Vic, and John won the last three ends to secured their 26-19 win.
Rob Irving, continuing his good form, and John Corcoran got away to a 17-4 lead over Mick Blunt and Arthur Corbett. Rob and John further consolidated their lead and led 26-9 after 17 ends and went on to win 27-16.
After the scores were tied 18 all following 19 ends, Steve Turner and Pat Cooney scored three shots on the next end and held on to defeat Gordon Dickson and Col Mudie 21-19.
After trailing 12-14, Martin Tighe and John Dunn won three of the last four ends to score a narrow 16-15 win over Cliff Westcott and Keith MacRae.
The major winners were Steve Turner and Pat Cooney with the minor winners being Vic McGlashan and John Hodge. Martin Tighe won the Stefan Mikita sponsored haircut voucher.
31 bowlers played two games of triples and five games of pairs last Saturday. A big thank you to president Alan for assuring all players got a game by him playing lead for two triples teams. This happened on four occasions over the holiday period.
The first triples game saw Alan Affleck, Allan Wright and Arthur Corbett lead 12-0 and go on to defeat Alan Affleck, Nimo Mills and John Ward 23-17.
The other triples game saw Ron Fisher, Guy Ellery and Kevin Hynds score a narrow 21-18 win over Les Kent, Wally Grant and Dave Johnson.
Gordon Dickson and Warren Bevan had a good 25-16 win over Bernie Mitchell and Warwick Parker.
Ray Jones and Col Mudie scored 16 shots on the last five ends to record a come from behind 31-17 win over Mike Valentine and Flip Fliedner.
Ron Hornery and Keith MacRae outlasted Greig Ball and Geoff Freeman in their 26-21 win.
Noel Nicholson and Baldy Frame led 14-1after six ends and went on to defeat Matthew Parker and Col Hayward 30-17.
Man of the match, Rob Irving, teamed with John Corcoran to defat John Dunn and Vic McGlashan (Forster) 35-14.
Major winners were Noel Nicholson and Baldy Frame with the minor prize winners being Gordon Dickson and Warren Bevan. Baldy also won the Stefan Mikita sponsored haircut voucher.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Round 1 of the Minor and Major Singles need to be played on either January 17 or January 24. Check the draw and arrange your game as soon as possible.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
Another good field of 17 bowlers turned out on December 28. They played three games of pairs and one triples.
In the triples game Alan Affleck led for both sides and teamed with Don Terrill and Vic McGlashan to defeat himself, Malcolm Watt and Gladrin Sun 14-12. It was good to see four visitors enjoy their Sunday bowls.
Keith Hutchison and Greg Townsend had a hard fought 13-9 win over Kim Evans and Dave Johnson.
Bill Skinner and Mal Porter had a good 25-10 win over Nimo Mills and Mike Valentine.
Mick Blunt and Craig Henry led all the way in their 15-7 win over Rob Irving and Chris Dunn.
Prize winners were Mick Blunt, Rob Irving, Kim Evans, Don Terrill and Malcolm Watt.
The jackpot was not won.
22 bowlers participated last Sunday.
The triples game saw Ian Brown, Keith Hutchison and Guy Ellery finish strongly, winning four of the last six ends, to record a 23-11 win over Alan Affleck, Mick Blunt and Nimo Mills.
George Boatswain and Chris Dunn led 14-7 and held on to defeat Bernie Jones (Dalmeny) and Kevin Hynds 14-12.
Clive Stibbard and Dave Johnson scored a narrow 15-14 win over Steve Turner and Craig Henry.
Gladrin Sun and Vic McGlashan led all the way in their 24-9 win over Don Terrill and John Harcus.
Maureen Bailey and Dean Searl only lost three ends in their 19-5 win over Jan Jones (Dalmeny) and John Dunn.
Prize winners were Jan Jones, Bernie Jones, George Boatswain, Clive Stibbard, John Dunn, Alan Affleck and Steve Turner.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

Sunday, January 11 (5pm) – Elv-is Alive, Performed by popular entertainers Paul Fenech and John ‘Elvis’ Collins.
Meals are available from Wednesday night through to Sunday during the Festival from new chef Mike Guess. The club weekly badge draw will be held tonight, Wednesday, January 7.
GENERAL
From Thursday, January 8 Thursday afternoon bowls will include a jackpot with all players having a chance to win.
By popular demand, Tuesday twilight bowls is being reintroduced and will start January 13.
Business House Bowls will recommence on Thursday, January 22. New teams are welcome and can nominate by contacting the club.
Bowlers are reminded of the Australia Day mini carnival. Nominate teams of four by entering your names in the blue book. Single entries are also being accepted.
