Here's the latest from the bowlie.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, January 19.
In spite of the high temperatures three games of Pairs were played.
Guy Ellery and Bob Freeman had the better of the early ends but Les Kent and Greg Huggins gradually got into the match and after eleven ends they had a narrow lead of 14 -10. On the next end Guy and Bob scored seven shots to lead 14 -10 and after the fifteenth end had built the lead to 19-11. From there on Les and Greg won five of the last six ends to run out winners 23 -20.
Col Hayward and Gordon Dickson had a comfortable win against John Corcoran and Steve “Nimo” Mills and the other match was won by Graham Barby and Ron Blake (visiting from the Central Coast) over Keith MacRae and Jim Blake.
The Prize for the day was won by Ron Blake and Graham Barby.
Saturday, January 21.
With a drop in temperature, a good field of twenty-four turned out to play six games of Pairs.
Matches were played on the No. 3 Green which was the first time this Green had been used in some time and a number of the players had trouble adjusting to the conditions. Overall though I think the volunteer greenkeepers have done a great job and given time everyone will adjust to the slower pace of the green.
After fifteen ends John Corcoran and Rob Irving were leading Warren Bevan and John Carr 15 -10 before Warren and John won five of the last six ends to win the match 22-16.
Arthur Corbett and John ward played well early on in their match against Tom Furey and Steve “Nimo” Mills and after ten ends lead 14-5. By the end of the fifteenth end scores were level 16 all but Arthur and John won four of the last six ends to win 25-19.
In other matches:
Col Hayward and Greg Huggins had a win over Geoff freeman and Jim Blake.
Steve Turner and Joe Crowley were too strong for John Hodge and Gordon Dickson.
Garry Carberry and Wally Grant had a comfortable win over John Davies and Les Kent.
Keith MacRae and Ted Wright had a convincing win over Col Mudie and Ray Jones
The Prize for the day went to Warren Bevan and John Carr and the Runners-up were Ted Wright and Keith MacRae.
