Twenty-one players turned out on a very chilly afternoon to play four games of Pairs and one of two bowls Triples with John Taylor playing Lead and Second with Greg Howlett as Skip against Bob Freeman, Martin Tighe and Guy Ellery. Greg’s team got away to s great start and went on to a convincing win but having used only two bowls each they managed four extra ends (playing twenty-five ends) and still got into the warmth of the clubhouse well ahead of the freezing Pairs players.
In the closest match of the day Ron Hornery and Ton Furey had the better of the early ends and, after eight ends, led Warren Bevan and John Hodge 15-3. Warren and John fought back well and after fourteen ends were only one shot behind. On the fifteenth end Ron and Tom scored four shots to lead 19-14. By the start of the eighteenth end Warren and John had levelled the scores at 19 all and went on to win three of the last four ends to claim victory 25-20.
Two of the other three Pairs games were won by fairly wide margins and Col Mudie and John Watson conceded the last end to Col Hayward and Gordon Dickson as did John Ward and Graham Dixon to Gary McPhee and John Carr and, sensibly, got back into the warmth as soon as they could. The other match went the full twenty-one ends as Graham Barby and Gladrin Sun insisted on being given the opportunity to reach ten shots, which they duly did before going down to Arthur Corbett and George Bradley.
The prize winners on the day were Col Hayward and Gordon Dickson and the Runners- Up prize went to John Hodge and Warren Bevan.
Saturday, August 26.
Five games of Pairs were played in what was a great afternoon, weather wise on felt more like a spring day than a winter one.
In what turned out to be a very close game Ray Jones and Bill Skinner, scoring ones and twos, built up a 12-4 lead against John Watson and Greg Huggins after the thirteenth end. From there on, John and Greg won six of the last eight ends to draw the match 15 all but Ray and Bill claimed victory having won the ends, 11-10.
Arthur Corbett and John Dunn got off to a flying start and, after three ends lead Ron Hornery and Mal Porter 5-0. From there on things were very close and with two ends to play Arthur and John lead 18-16. Over the last two ends Arthur and John went on to win the match 23-16.
In their match, Bruce Orr and Gwenda Carty lead John Carr and John Taylor 3-0 before the two Johns scored a four on the third end to lead 4-3. The lead was short lived and, in fact Bruce and Gwenda never gave up the lead again and went on to win 22-15.
The remaining Pairs matches resulted in convincing wins.
John Hodge and Eileen Bradley proved too strong for Col Moodie and Merilyn Rodgers.
John Ward and George Bradley had a win against Martin Tighe and Gordon Dickson.
The Winners prize went to John Hodge and Eileen Bradley and the Runners-up were John Ward and George Bradley
Badge Draw.
The Badge Draw was not won last Friday and will be worth $1100 this week and will be drawn on Friday night around 8:pm, after the meat and voucher raffles. You have to be there to win it so come along and have a great pub style meal and may be go home with a bundle of cash in your pocket.
