Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
MIXED FOURS
The two semi-final matches were played last week. Minnie Riordan, Mick Craft, Joan Simpson and Tom Furey took on Cherie Frame, Rob Irving, Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward. Col’s team led 10-5 after 8 ends. Tom’s team fought back and levelled the score at 13 all after 17 ends. Team Hayward then won the next two ends to lead 18-13 and despite losing the last two ends held on to record a narrow 18-16 win.
The other match saw Margaret Hawken, Col Mudie, Liz Byrne and Graham Barby play Wally Grant, Maree Grant, Chris Dunn and Pat Cooney. Graham’s team held an early 8-3 lead before Pat’s team came back to win the next six ends to lead 14-8. The next four ends were equally shared for Pat’s team to lead 17-11. Graham’s team won the last three ends but were unable to bridge the gap with Pat’s team hanging on to win 17-15.
MIXED PAIRS
Four first round matches were played last Wednesday night.
Cherie Frame and Peter McPhee played Rosemary and Bernie Mitchell. Cherie and Peter held a 9-4 lead after nine ends then Rosemary and Bernie scored a maximum eight shots to grab a 12-9 lead. The next four ends were hard fought with The Mitchell’s holding a 16-12 lead. Cherie and Peter then won five of the next six ends and led 20-17 after 20 ends. Rosemary and Bernie scored two shots on the last end which saw Cherie and Peter score a 20-19 win.
Margaret Hawken and Graham Barby played Michael Went (sub for Tom Casey) and Karen Casey. With Tom unavailable to play this match Michael came in as a sub and under the rules of the event a sub cannot skip which saw Karen step up to skip the match. Michael and Karen held a narrow 8-7 lead after eight ends. Margaret and Graham scored 10 shots in winning the next four ends to lead 17-8 and still held a handy 21-13 lead after 17 ends. Michael and Karen had the better of the last four ends but were unable to catch Margaret and Graham who held on to win 23-17. Karen has to be commended on her performance as skip as she is a newcomer to the game of bowls. She played very consistent bowls throughout and Graham had to be at his best to get his side home.
Elaine Miller and Dave Johnson played Maureen Baillie and George Boatswain. After trailing 3-12 Elaine and Dave won 11 of the next 12 ends to hold a commanding 27-13 lead. Maureen and George won the last three ends to reduce the margin to 27-17.
Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward played Chris Dunn and Pat Cooney. This started off a very close match with the score 8 all after 11 ends. Chris and Pat won four of the next six ends to establish a handy 19-10 lead. Gwenda and Col fought back and won three of the last four ends but it was Chris and Pat who held on to record a 21-18 win.
HANDICAP SINGLES
Four first round matches were played over the weekend.
Bernie Mitchell received a two shot handicap against Mike Valentine. Bernie had a good start and led 10-3 before Mike won four ends straight to grab an 11-10 lead. Bernie again established a handy lead of 17-12. Mike fought back and levelled the score at 20 all. The next two ends saw each player score a one shot end to make the score 21 all. Unfortunately for Bernie Mike scored a maximum four shots on the next end to take the match 25-21.
Rob Irving received a one shot handicap against Ted Wright. Rob grabbed an early advantage and led 13-4. Ted won seven of the next nine ends to trail by just one shot 16-17. Rob then won the last six ends to win 25-16.
Ron Hornery played Chris Dunn off the same handicap. Ron established a good 19-9 lead before Chris won nine of the next ten ends to grab a 21-20 lead. Ron scored one shot on each of the next two ends to lead 22-21 before scoring a maximum four shots to take the match 26-21.
Tom Furey played Wilbur Harris. After trailing early in the match Tom strung together six winning ends to lead 11-4. The next nine ends saw Wilbur reduce the margin to 16-11. Tom then scored a maximum four shot winning end and went on to record a 25-14 win.
