Pennants Off To A Good Start

Thursday Bowls The major pairs game between Graham Barby and John Davies against Rob Irving and Guy Ellery was keenly contested from start to finish. Graham and John led on all ends but one. Rob and Guy kept clawing back to finally lose 20 to 18 in a very good match. Greg Huggins and Steve Ryan defeated Col Woods and Arthur Corbett 28 to 17 while John Taylor and Keith McRae outlasted Bernie Mitchell and George Boatswain 24 to 21. Geoff Freeman and the improving Martin Tighe scored a comfortable win over Garry McPhee and Tom Furey 21 to 11 while Joe Crowley and Col Hayward were too strong for John Dunn and Greg Howlett 26 to 12. In the triples match George Bradley, John Watson and John Ward combined well to defeat Bob Freeman, Jim Blake and John Carr 28 to 14. Winners – G. Huggins, S. Ryan Runners Up – G. Barby, J. Saturday Bowls Twenty six bowlers played with two games of championship pairs and one major singles. In the pairs Tom Casey and Garry Carberry led Arthur Corbett and Col Hayward 11 to 1 but Arthur and Col fought back to 12 all eventually losing 34 to 13. Bernie Mitchell and George Boatswain put in a top effort against the favoured pair of Paul and Michael Went only to lose 23 to 17. In the singles game the consistent Garry McPhee won the last six ends to defeat Steve Turner 31 to 19.
Social games resulted in wins for Rob Irving and Tom Furey against Greg Howlett and Dave Johnson 18 to 15 while Joe Crowley, John Dunn and John Ward had a close win over John Carr, Martin Tighe and Ray Jones 19 to 16. In the remaining triples game John Watson, Greg Huggins and John Taylor had a 24 to 15 victory against Les Kent, Bob Freeman and Col Woods. Winners – R. Irving, T. Furey Runners up- J. Watson, G. A feature of most matches was the number of high scoring games. Big wins were recorded by Central West Glass, We Wreckem, We Fixem, J and CK and Casey Surveyors. The most exciting game was between Loopy Loopers and High Rollers with the loopy lads getting two shots on the final end to finish 12 all.
