Parkes Defeats Baradine In Pennants

PENNANTS.
The Pennant season got underway on the weekend with mixed luck for our three sides.
In Grade Two on Saturday, our team had a good win, playing at home, against Baradine.
The team of John Davies, Tom Furey, Warwick Parker and Paul Henry had a narrow win, 19-15.
Garry Carberry, Mark Dwyer, Dave Johnson and Graham Barby had a convincing win, 27-14 and on the third rink, Col Hayward, Geoff Freeman, Steve Ryan and John Hodge went down by two shots, 20-18.
The aggregate score went our way 64 – 49 giving us a nine points to one point win.
On Sunday, our Grade5 side travelled to Canowindra and went down on two of the three rinks to lose 66-49 overall. The team of Keith MacRae, Guy Ellery, Greg Townsend and Rob Irving had a good win, 23-11.
On the second rink, John Ward, Arthur Corbett, John Carr and Gary McPhee won twelve of the twenty-one ends but went down narrowly, 21-20 and on the third rink, Canowindra were too strong for Col Mudie, Steve Turner, Ron Hornery and Ray Jones winning 34-6.
The points went to Canowindra, 9-1.
On Sunday Our Grade 7 side hosted Parkes Railway/Diggers and the visitors came away with a nine points to one win, scoring sixty-eight shots to fifty-Four.
The team of George Boatswain, Ted Wright, Gladrin Sun and Jim Blake had a convincing win, 25-13.
On the second rink, Joe Crowley, Graham Dixon, Gordon Dickson and Greg Huggins won thirteen of the twenty-one ends but went down 23-19 and on the other rink Railway/Diggers proved too strong for Steve “Nimo” Mills, Bernie Mitchell, Col Woods and Bob Freeman, winning 32-10.
Congratulations to all players and good luck next week when our 2’s travel to Dubbo City Club, the 5’s are at home to Parkes Railway/Diggers and the 7’s travel to Condobolin.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Over the last week, four Major Single’s games have been played with convincing wins to Warwick Parker against Les Kent, Col Hayward over Tom Furey, Col Mudie against Wilbur Harris and George Boatswain against Gladrin Sun.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, February 23.
A good field of twenty-four bowlers turned out to play six games of Pairs.
John Davies and Graham Barby took an early lead and by the start of the sixth end had a lead of 6-1. Col Mudie and Ron Hornery got back into the match and the scores were level 9 all after ten ends. From there on, Col and Ron took a slight lead and in the end hung on for a 19-17 win.
In their match, John Corcoran and John Hodge got away to a “flyer” to lead 9-0 after five ends and though Geoff Freeman and Greg Howlett (visiting from the Blue Mountains) fought hard to get back into the match, the two Johns managed a narrow win 21-19.
Other matches went to:Warren Bevan and Ray Jones against Keith MacRae and Greg Townsend.
John Ward and John Carr against Gordon Dickson and Kevin Wales (visiting from Parkes Railway/Diggers club).
Graham Dixon and Mike Valentine against Joe Crowley and Ron Fisher
John Dunn and Bill Skinner against Col Woods and George Bradley
The Winners Prizes for the day went to John Corcoran and John Hodge and the Runners-up prize was won by Warren Bevan and Ray Jones
Saturday, February 25.
Two games of Pairs and one of Triples were played as well as the Pennants and Major Single’s games.
All three games were fairly close with one draw, one win by a single shot and one by three shots.
In spite of winning the ends by 13-8, Arthur Corbett and John Carr had a draw with Steve Turner and Guy Ellery. Arthur and John lead 16-13 with one on to play but Steve and Guy managed to get three shots on that end to level the scores at 16 all.
The other Pairs match was won by John Dunn and Rob Irving 20-17 against Bruce Orr and Joe Crowley. John and Rob had lead 16-1 early in the match before Bruce and Joe staged a brilliant come back but just failed to win the match.
The Triples match was a low scoring game and the team of Les Kent, Martyn Tighe and Bill Skinner just outlasted Mike Valentine, Ron Fisher and George Bradley to win 14-13
The Winners prize went to George Boatswain and Maureen Baillie who was Marker for the Major Singles match and the Runners-up were Arthur Corbett and John Carr.
1300 Bugman Barefoot Bowls.
Eighteen teams turned out to play a couple of close games and some not so close.
In a very close match Casey Surveying lead Parkes Shire Council 11-5after nine ends before the Council team closed the gap over the remaining ends to go down by one shot 11-10.
Rebelle shot away to lead 11-3 before Purple People fought back over the concluding stages, but Rebelle hung on for a close 12-10 win.
Central West Glass also got away to a great start in their match against Three Amigos, leading 13-2 after five ends, but struggled over the last ends to win narrowly, 18-16.
In other matches;
We Wreck ‘em ‘N’ We Fix ‘em had another win, beating The Royal.
Hi Rollers just beat the Peak Hill Girls.
Loopy Loppers were too good for Pink.
Bushies had a win over Bowls for Beers.
Elvii were too strong for the Happy Wanderers.
Bowl Bros. had a convincing win against the Wright Brothers.
As usual, a great night was had by all and many thanks to Tom Furey for cooking the snacks we all enjoyed after the games.
Friday Night
The Badge Draw was not won last Friday and will be worth $1100 this week. The draw will take place after the meat and voucher raffle.
As usual good pub style meals will be available at very reasonable prices.
