Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, in a Semi-Final of the Minor Singles, Peter McPhee won the first end but going in to the seventh end Greg Townsend lead 6-1. Scores were fairly even over the next ten ends, and Peter led narrowly, 15-12, at the start of the seventeenth end. Peter scored twelve shots on the next four ends and led by fifteen shots after the twentieth end, 27-12. Greg fought back into the game but could not bridge the gap and after thirty ends Peter claimed the match 31-25 and will meet John Watson in the Final.
In a Minor Pairs match Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris got off to a good start and led George Boatswain and Gladrin Sun 5-0 after four ends. George and Gladrin scored three shots on the fifth end but from there on Steve and Wilbur took control of the match and advanced to the next round with a convincing win, 28-9.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, June 29.
A field of twenty bowlers played five games of Pairs with some close results.
Col Mudie and Rob Irving had a lead of 8-0 after five ends of their match against Col Hayward and Mike Valentine. Col and Mike gradually got back into the match but it wasn’t until the twentieth end that they finally took the lead 21-19 with one end to play. Some tell me it was luck and some say it was great bowls but, in any event, Col and Rob Scored two shots on the last end to draw the match21 all but claim victory, having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played.
In another close game, John Ward and Bill Skinner lead 5-0 early in the match but Les Kent and Bernie Mitchell had levelled the scores, 5 all after six ends. From there on the scores remained very close, with never more than two shots in it and with one end to play the score was 17 all. The last end was won by John and Bill, who won the match by a single shot, 18-17.
In the other matches;
Brett Frame and Ray Jones had a good win against Tom Furey and Gary McPhee.
Graham Dixon and George Bradley proved too strong for Steve Ryan and Martin Tighe.
John Hodge and Graham Barby had a convincing win against Warren Bevan and Ron Hornery.
The Prize winners were John Hodge and Graham Barby and the Runners-up prize went to Col Mudie and Rob Irving.
Saturday, July 1.
Twenty players turned out to play two games of Triples and two games of Pairs.
Results were as follows;
Col Mudie and Rhona Went beat John Ward and Col Woods, 28-14.
John Hodge and Rob Irving defeated Tom Furey and Graham Dixon 24-16.
Brett Frame, Les Kent and Bill Skinner defeated Col Hayward, John Watson and Greg Huggins, 28-13.
