Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, October 14 the Final of the Club Minor Triples Championship was played. Gary McPhee, Martin Tighe and Jim Blake took on Wilbur Harris, Guy Ellery and Steve Turner. The opening ends were fairly evenly divided and after six ends Wilbur’s team lead 4-3. On the seventh end Gary’s side scored four shots to open up a lead of 7-4 and by the eighteenth end lead by seven shots, 16-9. With three ends to play Gary’s team still has a six shot lead and though Wilbur’s team won the final three ends they could not bridge the gap and Gary, Martin and Jim claimed the title 18-15.
In a Major Triples match, on Thursday, October 12, John Davies, Keith MacRae, and Graham Barby had the best of the early ends in their match against Arthur Corbett, John Ward and Rob Irving and lead 18-4 going into the fourteenth end. Seven of the next eight ends were won by Arthur’s team and with four ends to play the scores were tied at 19 all. Going into the last end John’s team lead 21-20 but Arthur’s side scored three on the last and to win the match 23-21 and advance to the next round.
A Handicap singles match was played on Thursday and George Bradley lead Martin Tighe 21-13 before Martin scored twelve shots on the next four ends to claim the match 25-21.
In a Handicap Pairs match, also on Thursday, Tom Furey and Greg Huggins won the first three ends against Greg Howlett and Mike Valentine to lead 6-0. Tom and Greg gradually took control of the match and advanced to the next round with a 20-14 win.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, October 12.
Fourteen players turned out for two games of Pairs and one Triples match.
The Triples match turned out to be the closest of the day with Col Mudie, Col Woods and John Dunn taking on Ron Hornery, Gladrin Sun and John Hodge. Col’s side played well from the start and after five ends lead 10-0. Ron’s team fought back well and with one end to play the score was 17-16 in favour of Col’s team. In a tense last end Col’s team managed to score one shot to win the match 18-16.
In the Pairs matches, Warren Bevan and John Watson had a narrow win, 19-15 against Gary McPhee and Joe Crowley, while Geoff Freeman and John
Carr beat Ted Wright and John Taylor 25-16.
The Winners on the day were Martin Tighe and Bernie Mitchell (who was Marker for the Handicap Singles match) and The Runners-up prize went to Warren Bevan and John Watson.
Saturday, October 14.
Twenty-three turned out to play three games of Pairs and two Triples matches (with John Watson playing both lead and second in one of the matches) which produced some fairly wide score lines.
In the closest match Ted Wright and Mike Valentine were down early on in the game and it wasn’t until the seventeenth that they took the lead from Keith MacRae and Les Kent and went on to win 22-16.
Other results were;
Geoff Freeman and Col Woods had a convincing win against Dick Wilkie and Rob Tinker.
John Davies and Gladrin Sun proved too strong for Dave Johnson and Ron Hornery.
Arthur Corbett, John Carr and Maureen Wilkie were too god for John Taylor, Joe Crowley and Greg Huggins.
John Ward, Rob Irving and Bruce Orr had a win against Steve Ryan and John Watson.
Sunday, October 15.
Sunday morning Mixed Bowls got off to a slow start with only eight players turning out.
Quantity may have been down but there is no doubting the quality of the teams that played.
In a hard fought match the husband and wife teams of Steve and Lynn Ryan did battle against Bruce and Lea Orr. With the outcome in doubt right up to the last end the Ryan’s claimed victory 14-11.
The other match saw Greg Townsend and Liz Byrne score a win over Rob Irving and Brenda Davies.
We hope to see a few more starters next Sunday morning with names in by 9-30 for a 10.00 start.
Twilight Bowls.
It was good to see twenty teams playing on our “practice” night but when competition starts this Thursday, October 19, it’s not too late to get involved.
It’s a great, relaxed way to get into our sport so, if you have never played before or want to return to bowls, come along on the night to register. We are looking for teams of three or come along on your own and we will try to team you up with a couple of other players
All equipment is proved so all you need are some flat soled shoes – or play barefoot if you prefer.
Cost is $10 per week which includes a light supper after the game and our bar staff will gladly serve you a nice cool drink, alcoholic or otherwise.
Look forward to seeing you on the night.
Central West District Bowls Association.
The Annual General Meeting of the CWDBA will be held at our Club on Saturday, November 4 commencing at 10.00 AM. All interested parties are welcome to attend so if you want to know what’s going on in Bowls in our District we look forward to welcoming you on the day. Badge Draw.
The Badge Draw was not won last Friday and will be worth $1300 this week and will be drawn on Friday night sometime after 8-00, after the meat and voucher raffles. You have to be there to win it so come along and have a great pub style meal and may be go home with a bundle of cash in your pocket.
