Here is the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
In a Major Singles match between Greg Howlett and Wilbur Smith, the scores were even over the first nine ends before Wilbur won the next five ends to take a ten shot lead, 16-6. Greg fought back but Wilbur was able to maintain his lead and won the match 31-21 after thirty-five ends.
The Major Triples team of Tom Furey, Dave Johnson and Gary McPhee got off to a great start to lead John Davies, Keith MacRae and Graham Barby 8-1 after four ends. Scores were fairly even until John’s team won four ends in a row to lead 22-17 after nineteen ends. Tom’s team fought hard but could not bridge the gap and John, Keith and Graham advanced to the next round with a 26-22 win.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, August 2.
On a great day for Bowls, twenty four players contested six games of Pairs with three of them being decided by a single shot.
Col Hayward and Jim Blake took on John Corcoran and Rob Irving and the scores were level at 3, 4, 8, 11, 12 and with one end to play it was 19 all before John and Rob scored the winning shot on the last end.
Gary McPhee and Ian Simpson started well against John Davies and Greg Huggins and lead 9-6 before John and Greg scored five shots on the twelfth end to take the lead 11-9. The next four ends went to Gary and Ian and they went out to lead 17-11. With one end to play John and Greg needed four shots to force a draw and though they scored three shots, Gary and Ian ran out winners, 19-18.
In the other close match Steve Mills and George Bradley scored seven shots on the first three ends but Keith MacRae and Gordon Dickson won the next five ends to level the scores, 7 all. After twenty ends the scores were again level at 15 all and on the last end Keith and Gordon were holding three shots but with his last bowl Steve drew the shot to win the match.
Warren Bevan and Ray Jones won a fairly close one, 24-20 against Geoff Freeman and Graham Barby.
Greg Howlett and Brenda Davies had a comfortable win against Ted Wright and John Watson and in the other match Col Mudie and Steve Ryan were too good for Tom Furey and Ron Hornery.
The winning rink prize went to Greg Howlett and Brenda Davies and the team of Col Mudie and Steve Ryan were the Runners-up.
Saturday, August 4.
Another great day for Bowls and twenty-two players turned out to play four games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
It was good to see Emma Byrne team up with her mother Liz and come from behind to score seven shots on the last three ends to defeat Les Kent and Greg Huggins 23-18. Emma visits the club quite regularly but I think it’s the first time she has had a game.
In the other Pairs matches, Guy Ellery and Tom Furey got the better of Mark Dwyer and Steve Turner, 22-14.
Col Hayward and Dave Johnson proved too strong for John Davies and Steve Ryan, winning 22-15.
Arthur Corbett and Rose Howlett had a convincing win against Ray Jones and Joe Crowley.
In the Triples match, Col Mudie, Rob Frame and Gordon Dickson were in front 16-13 before Rhona Went, Ron Hornery and Rob Irving won six of the last seven ends to claim the match 25-17.
The winning rink prize went to the winning Triples team. There is no indication of who won the Runners-up prize.
SUNDAY BOWLS.
This continues to be a popular innovation and twenty-four bowlers played four games of Triples. Proceeds of the day will go to the Grade 2 Pennants side to help with expenses on their trip to Sydney to represent the Club in the State Pennant Finals in two weeks. This is a very friendly casual day and play ends at 3-30 so we don’t miss any of the football and I believe it will continue in the future. All are welcome so come along for a great relaxing afternoon.
Results were:
Liz Byrne, Wally Grant and Rose Howlett just got home 19-18 against Dave Johnson, Gwenda Carty and Janelle Ross.
In a highly competitive (but friendly) match Mark Dwyer, Guy Ellery and Steve Turner claimed bragging rights against Col Hayward, Tom Furey and Maree Grant, 20-19.
Ray Jones, Jim Blake and Eileen Bradley won a fairly close one, 20-16 against Rob Irving, Joe Crowley and Elaine Miller.
Arthur Corbett, Rhona Went and George Bradley were level at 11 all after thirteen ends against Steve Ryan, Greg Howlett and Loraine Baker before Arthur’s team won five of the last six ends to win 24-13.
The winning rink Prize was won by Mark, Guy and Steve.
